Juliana Azoubel teaches the true meaning of the word overcome! It shows how the passion for her daughter and for the profession she has chosen leads her to face the daily challenges of those who face the disease head on.
For the dancer and dance teacher Giuliana Azoubelovercome is more than a word: it is a daily goal. This is what he did in the fight against cancer, an old acquaintance of his life. First, he followed his mother’s treatment, Inez. “I still remember the struggle she experienced, the dilemmas related to hair loss, the limitations of movement, the physical and psychological consequences.”
Then, two years after her mother’s death, she had to deal with her own diagnosis: breast cancer. During treatment he received an invitation for a scholarship to the United States. However, another type of cancer appeared and, given the medical recommendations, he understood that it was not the time to leave Brazil, as severe treatment was coming.
Breast cancer and motherhood
During this period I already wanted to become a mother. However, when the doctor said the treatment would leave her sterile, the decision to get pregnant came. After treatment and a complicated pregnancy, Larissa came into the world. After the initial turbulence, he managed to get the scholarship he had lost again. He packed his bags and went to the United States.
Passion for dance
Juliana I was balancing motherhood and work as a teacher and choreographer in the United States, until the Covid-19 pandemic broke out. Alone, with a young daughter, she remembers that little word so common in her routine: overcome. “At one point I was in a hospital in Illinois and so was my daughter.” Given the vulnerability to the disease, the numerous hospital admissions, doctors began to investigate whether there was some type of genetic predisposition. “They found that the variation of the combinations in my body is very rare. There are only six cases in the whole world.” Therefore, he initiated a research protocol that reduced the costs of complex treatment in the United States. In the meantime, he tried to follow the routine he loves so much: “Taking care of ‘Lali’ and doing the profession I love”he reflects.
Ultimately, for this Pernambuco native, the movement provided by dance and the love for her daughter are key to following every step of the process. “These are very harsh realities, but the passion for everything I do is what keeps me standing. And smiling. I try to make sure that all this doesn’t take away my strength or enthusiasm in everything I do”he concludes.
