They are a reflection of our overall health and what we eat
When we think about improving the health of our hair, skin and nails, the first thing that probably comes to mind is beauty products. But food matters too!
Our skin, hair, and nails reflect what we put into our bodies, and there are some foods that can help keep them healthy. See some examples below.
1. Fatty fish
Seafood rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and redness in the body and skin, as well as being an excellent source of protein, vitamin E, antioxidants and biotin. The latter is a nutrient – also known as vitamin B7 – which supports the production of keratin and acts in the formation of skin, nails and hair. The most recommended fish are salmon, herring and mackerel.
2. Sweet potato
The food is rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant pigment and one of the ways to indirectly obtain vitamin A, one of the factors responsible for the production of keratin (essential for the health of skin, hair and nails). Additionally, one study has already indicated that purple sweet potatoes have antioxidant properties that can improve skin inflammation. Antioxidants are also able to help protect you from free radicals and, consequently, premature aging.
3. Nuts and seeds
Some seeds, especially sunflower seeds, are good sources of biotin, protein, and vitamin E. Walnuts and almonds are also rich in antioxidants and vitamin E, which helps fight oxidative damage. It’s also worth mentioning that vitamin E has anti-inflammatory properties that can help absorb the light energy of ultraviolet rays and protect against skin damage, such as fine wrinkles and sun spots.
4. Avocado
Avocados are full of healthy fats and nutrients that promote healthy skin and nails, including vitamin C, known to aid collagen production and wrinkle reduction, vitamin A, and vitamin E.
5. Egg
Protein is an essential part of a healthy hair diet as it is made up of another protein known as keratin. Therefore, a diet deficient in this nutrient can lead to weaker and brittle hair. And eggs are a food rich in high-quality protein!
6. Dark vegetables
Eating leafy greens provides your body with an abundance of nutrients that can benefit your hair, skin, and nails. Prime examples include: spinach, chard and kale.
7. Foods rich in water
Hydration is an essential factor for healthy hair, skin and nails, but drinking only water is not the only way to ensure it. Some foods with high water content can help. See some examples:
- Cucumber
- Watermelon
- Celery
- Waste
- Fishing
- Lettuce
- Watercress
- Strawberries
