Promotions can hide dangerous traps for the consumer.
Black Friday is synonymous with great promotions, but also with traps for consumers. Among the most sought-after offerings are dietary supplements, whose growing popularity attracts both buyers and counterfeiters. The problem is not small: according to the Yearbook of the Brazilian Association for the Fight against Counterfeiting, in 2022 Brazil lost 345 billion reais due to counterfeit products.
The billion-dollar supplement industry is not immune. Débora Dutra, marketing director at Vitafor, explains that counterfeit products can contain harmful substances that pose a serious health risk.
“Food supplementation is a serious issue, which directly affects people’s health and can lead to irreversible situations depending on the case and the substance used in the counterfeit product,” he warns.
To shop safely during Black Friday, Débora recommends 10 tips to avoid counterfeit supplements
1. Choose reliable retailers: Avoid informal trading platforms or unknown shops.
2. Prefer the official website of the brand: Reputable brands have official online sales channels.
3. Choose large pharmacy chains: Known networks provide greater security and authenticity.
4. Buy in specialized shops in the sector: Look for reference establishments that deal exclusively with quality products.
5. Be wary of very low prices: Exaggerated promotions can be a sign of counterfeiting.
6. Check the origin of the product: Check information such as the seal of authenticity and registration with Anvisa.
7. Request an invoice: It is a guarantee of the origin and authenticity of the supplement.
8. Attention to packing details: Note inconsistencies such as spelling errors or seals that differ from the usual standard.
9. Consult the brand’s official channels: If in doubt, contact the brand directly to confirm the origin.
10. Follow Anvisa alerts: The agency regularly publishes lists of irregular and counterfeit products.
“By following these tips and favoring the authenticity of the products, you will be able to guarantee your health and enjoy the promotions without worries,” guarantees Débora.
The expert points out that counterfeit products may contain undeclared, ineffective or even harmful substances, such as heavy metals or contaminants. Furthermore, the absence of quality control can result in inadequate doses of nutrients. When in doubt, be wary of miracle promises and prioritize your health.
