Rubens Paiva

The death of the family patriarch was investigated by the National Truth Commission and the State Truth Commission of Rio de Janeiro. In 2014, the Prosecutor’s Office charged five soldiers with the crime, but unfortunately none of them were arrested or punished.

Eunice Paiva

After her husband’s death, Eunice graduated from law school and continued to work as an activist. Sad fact: only in 1996 did he obtain Rubens’ death certificate. She lived with Alzheimer’s for 14 years and died in 2018.

Marcelo Rubens Paiva

He dedicates himself to literature to tell the story of his family, with the film Still I’m Here, an adaptation of his book of the same name, released in 2014. At the age of 20, Marcelo suffered an accident that forced him to lose his movement of the body, a story told in his other great literary success, Feliz Ano Velho, from 1982.

Eunice and Rubens’ eldest daughter is 71 years old. She is a renowned social psychologist and has been a full professor at the University of São Paulo (USP) since 1987. He carries out research on health-related topics, such as AIDS and Covid-19.

Maria Eliana Paiva

The military arrested the couple’s second daughter when she was just 15, the day after kidnapping her father. She graduated as an art educator and journalist from USP. Eliana prefers to stay away from the media.

Ana Lucia Paiva

She is a great friend of Walter Salles, the director of the film. Graduated in mathematics, Ana Lúcia has embarked on a career as an entrepreneur. Now 67, he said the film was a sort of “revenge.”

Maria Beatriz Paiva

The couple’s youngest daughter, now 64, is a psychologist and teacher. In 2013 Maria Beatriz lived in Switzerland, where she worked at the Brazilian embassy in Bern.
