“Just to let you know that the procedure was a success, it’s over and the president is awake and talking. He goes to the same bed he was in in the ICU and the procedure is done in a catheterization room. The procedure took less an hour,” he told reporters at the hospital entrance.
The procedure Lula underwent is called middle meningeal artery embolization. On the afternoon of Wednesday the 11th, the medical team explained that this second operation had already been planned since the president was hospitalized and represents a precaution to avoid possible new brain hemorrhages in the future.
According to doctors, the operation was not carried out in a surgical center, but in a catheterization room. A catheter was inserted through the president’s femoral artery, which reaches the head region to close the small local arteries. The surgery is “low risk” and “relatively simple”.
In the latest medical bulletin, released on Wednesday afternoon, doctors say that Lula “spent the day well, without complications, underwent physiotherapy, walked and received visits from his family” in hospital. Previously, it was also reported that he “had good progress in the immediate postoperative period, without complications.”

According to the medical team, the new procedure does not interfere with the president’s planned resignation. The expectation, if the situation goes well, is that Lula will return to Brasilia next week. The president is accompanied by first lady Janja Lula da Silva.
