Summary
The price of Christmas basket products will increase significantly in 2024 due to climate impacts and inflationary risks.
Brazilians’ Christmas dinner this year will have a savory ingredient in addition to the seasoning of the traditional dishes of the season: the price of the products. The new monitoring of the values of the items in the Christmas basket, carried out by Neogrid, a technology and data intelligence ecosystem that develops solutions in the management of the consumption chain, signals an increase in the average price of products such as olive oil (34.3%) , rice (28.5%), cod (22.5%) and even panettone (5.4%).
The study shows increases in value for 12 of the 13 products analyzed, between December 2023 and October 2024. The largest changes occurred in the average price of a liter of olive oil, which went from R$ 84.86 to R$ 114.00 in the period, and rice, which went from R$ 10.64 to R$ 13.70. English potatoes increased by 23.2% (from R$7.37 to R$9.08) and mayonnaise increased by 14.3% (from R$27.78 to R$31.76).
“Climate change has generated a series of impacts that result in this increase, starting with the reduction of cultivated areas occupied by fires. The El Niño phenomenon, for example, affected the soybean harvest, an essential food for animals such as pigs, which ends up influencing the final price of several items”, explains Anna Fercher, coordinator of Neogrid’s Customer Service and Strategic Data.
More expensive proteins
Consumers have felt the increase in the price of the main proteins used during the end-of-year holidays. The value of cod, for example, grew by 22.5% (from R$100.94 in December 2023, to R$123.66 in October this year).
Followed by chicken, the most requested bird for dinner, with a variation of +22.2% (from R$20.55 to R$25.11). The pork category increased by 9.8% (from R$30.63 to R$33.64).
Drinks too
Liquids also recorded price increases: ready-made juices increased by 16.4%, while soft drinks increased by 15%. Alcoholic beverages, such as beer, increased by 14.4%, while wine increased by 3.1%. Of all the products in the cart, the only one that recorded a price drop was concentrated juice (-21%). The product cost R$22.54 in December last year and dropped to R$17.51 in October 2024.
