The doctor explains why Ravi was admitted to hospital is rare for children like him

What is enterocolitis? The illness that caused the hospitalization of Ravi, son of Viih Tube and Eliezer. Find out what the symptoms and treatment are

The child Ravison of VIII Tube AND Eliezerwas released from hospital this Saturday, December 14, after being hospitalized for 20 days. The boy was hospitalized with enterocolitis and had to remain under observation until he recovered. So, how about learning more about the disease? THE CARAS Brazil I spoke to the pediatrician Dr. Tatiana Mota da Silvafrom the Mantelli clinic, to find out more about the pathology. Check it out below.

According to Dr. Tatiana Mota da Silva, enterocolitis is an inflammation of the intestine. In the type of necrotizing enterocolitis, which can occur in premature or non-premature babies, there is “ischemia, i.e. lack of blood circulation in the tissues and bacterial infection“.

And what are the symptoms? “The most common symptoms are gastrointestinal ones, such as bilious vomiting, abdominal pain and distension, blood in the stool“, said the doctor. Treatment is carried out with fasting and parenteral nutrition, which is intravenous, antibiotic therapy and in some cases it may even be necessary to perform surgery.

The doctor also said that it is rare for enterocolitis to occur in babies born at 9 months, as in the case of Ravi, who came into the world at 38 weeks and 4 days of gestation. “About 90% of cases occur in premature infants, that is, with a gestational age of less than 37 weeks.“he said, who also gave advice to parents of children.”The main focus is on the acceptance of breastfeeding. In the presence of frequent vomiting, abdominal pain and distension, bloody stools, contact your pediatrician immediately.“.

Another caveat is that enterocolitis can develop into other health conditions if treatment is not done correctly. “Some children may develop short bowel syndrome, due to the loss of part of the intestine in surgical cases and, in some cases, it can even lead to death. Some cardiovascular diseases can evolve with a decrease in mesenteric blood circulation, which can be one of the causes of enterocolitis“said Dr. Tatiana Mota da Silva.

Finally, the doctor said that recovery after discharge from the hospital depends on a case-by-case basis and that there is a possibility of a normal life for the child after treatment. “It depends a lot on the evolution of each child’s condition. In cases with good evolution, the child can return home and have a completely normal life. In those who develop short bowel syndrome, the baby’s feeding is stopped orally and he requires parenteral feeding, that is, intravenously, which can make discharge from the hospital impossible.“, he concluded.
