The holidays are a time of celebration, but for many pets they can be synonymous with stress, anxiety and escapes due to fireworks. Anyone who has a pet at home knows how much they can get hurt and even escape at this time of year.
Veterinarian specializing in animal nutrition, Cleuma Ferreira, explains that this situation can trigger long-term health problems, such as behavioral disorders and socialization difficulties.
“Tremors, panting, excessive barking and recurrent escape attempts may be associated with dogs, while cats may exhibit intense vocalization, scratching and voiding outside the litter box. If left uninvestigated, this may extend to everyday life,” says Cleuma.
Pets can get sick and even run away
But some actions can be taken to minimize the suffering of our furry friends this time of year. In addition to creating dens and hiding places for animals to hide in, leave toys available to distract them and reduce food during the day so that the animal is interested in snacks at night.
Every year end, Gisela and Maria Mattos, founders of Pet Chef Chico, a company specializing in natural lunch boxes for pets, experience the same problem with their mutts, Chico and Zeca.
“Here at home, the solution we found was to give them a safe space, stay close and always do noise desensitization training. Chico has had this training since he was little and today it is easier for him to control , in general, caresses and caresses”. keeping him in his place, with the toys he likes and our natural snacks, already calms him,” comments Gisela.
The situation is different with Zeca. “With him the process is longer, since he already has more difficulty being alone and accepting snacks, now we are starting to train him to accept noise,” says Maria.
Recognize the signs
Knowing the animal is the best way to spot signs of stress, explains the veterinarian. “Combining what you know about your pet with important behavioral techniques can help a lot in this process. Gradual desensitization can help some pets get used to loud sounds. Tools like anti-anxiety vests can also offer a sense of security,” he completes.
To prevent escapes it is essential to reinforce fences and gates, as well as ensuring that windows and doors are tightly closed during fireworks displays. Cleuma reinforces the need to use collars with identification and microchips to facilitate the location of lost animals. “This way, if something happens, you can easily locate your pet, but the best premise is to prevent escape, always.”
The vet reiterates that drugs such as sedatives or anxiolytics can only be used with a medical prescription. “It should only be recommended by the professional accompanying the animal, but natural treatments, such as melatonin supplements and synthetic pheromones, may also be indicated if the animal is healthy,” he adds.
