At least two cities on the southern coast of Sao Paulo, which will receive a large influx of tourists at the end of the year, will not have the traditional fireworks display on the beach between 2024 and 2025. “Out of respect for people on the autism spectrum, pets, the elderly and bedridden people, Praia Grande will not host fireworks on New Year’s Eve,” read a statement released by the town hall. In Mongaguá the decision was made for the same reason, according to the local municipality.
The decisions have left the population and tourists divided. “There are silent fires, mayor, a tourist city like ours, please, right,” complained one resident in a comment on the Praia Grande town hall publication that officially canceled the show. “Congratulations on the right decision,” praised another.
“Do you know what will happen? In the absence of a demonstration organized by the city hall – many will bring their firecrackers to the beach and release them – what will become of security? We already know, because there have been tragedies in the recent past,” warned a third .
Low intensity fireworks
In previous years, municipalities had invested in fires with low energy consumption and low noise technology. It is the same technology used in Dubai, at Disney and on New Year’s Eve in Copacabana, in Rio de Janeiro, the most famous in Brazil.
In Santos, the largest city in Baixada Santista, fires continue with low-energy fires for 14 minutes. Guarujá also confirmed 20 minutes of fireworks during his official celebration.
