Soap operas inspired by books: from page to screen!

Remember the novels inspired by literary classics

Tieta returned to Globo afternoons, to the joy of all of us! The 1989 classic is inspired by the book Tieta do Agrestewritten in 1977 by the famous Bahian author Jorge Amado, but takes some creative liberties compared to the book, which is shorter. But he is not alone Tieta that came from the pages of books and shone in television fiction. In fact, many much-loved soap opera plots have been inspired by literature. Check out some!

Gabriella (1975 and 2012)

Tieta It was not the only time that a work by Jorge Amado enchanted us in soap operas. The other, equally famous, is Gabriellaimmortalized first by the actress Sônia Braga and then by Juliana Paes in the 2012 remake, both inspired by the book Gabriela, Carnation and Cinnamonsince 1958.

The carnation and the rose (2000)

One of Brazil’s most beloved soap operas, rerun three times It’s worth seeing again. It is inspired by a timeless classic: The Taming of the Shrew, comedy by William Shakespeare, written around 1594! And the author Walcyr Carrasco did not hide his influence, keeping the names of the protagonists. But, while Petruchio in the book is a newcomer to the city who wants to do well, in the soap opera, Eduardo Moscovis played a bankrupt small farmer in the 1920s, who needed the help of the rich, feminist and hotheaded Catarina (Adriana Esteves) to save your site.

Pride and passion (2018)

The character of Darcy (Thiago Lacerda) wasn’t just a homage. The plot of the six was completely inspired by the classic novels of Jane Austen, and in particular by Pride and prejudice (1813). Basically, the plot of the telenovela is a Brazilian version of the book.

Elisabeta (Nathalia Dill) –

Hilda Hurricane (1998)

The sweetness of TikTok was also born from a book! Before Rodrigo Santoro and Ana Paula Arósio shone as Malthus and Hilda in the miniseries Globo, Hilda Hurricane was a classic of Minas Gerais literature, written by Roberto Drummond in 1991. Well, if you watched it and recognized that name, yes, the journalist Roberto Drummond (Danton Mello) is a retelling of the author himself, who inserted into the story. In the book Roberto tells most of the events. In addition to talking about Hilda, he focuses a lot on his memories of the city of Belo Horizonte, before the 1964 military coup.

Pepper chocolate (2003)

However, to conclude our list, I admit that this is a bit of a cheat. Ana Francisca’s (Mariana Ximenes) adorable story doesn’t come directly from a book, but some key moments from the soap opera are inspired by literature. The plot of the wronged good guy plotting revenge against everyone who did it is barely reminiscent The Count of Monte Cristobook from 1844, by Alexandre Dumas. Furthermore, author Walcyr Carrasco confirmed that he was also inspired by other works. I am The Merry Widowwritten by Franz Lehár, and the play The visit of the Old Ladyby Friedrich Dürrenmatt.

But one of the novel’s most iconic scenes, when Ana is humiliated at the debutante ball after a bucket of green paint is thrown at her, is a lighter version of what happens in Stephen King’s book, Bring the stranger (1974), when poor Carrie is covered in pig’s blood during prom.

Ana’s revenge is also much calmer. While “Pata Caca” took revenge by becoming rich, beautiful and powerful, Carrie lowered her level and… killed everyone involved in the bullying. This scene shows us what is most incredible about inspiration, as a few simple creative decisions can transform the same scene into something completely different.
