Experts highlight the main mistakes that can damage the skin in summer. Check:

1. Don’t apply sunscreen

This is probably the worst mistake you can make with your skin and your health as a whole. “Radiation-induced photoaging leads to sagging. It can also cause skin cancer in the long term. It is essential to use and reapply sunscreen throughout the day,” explains dermatologist Dr. Paola Pomerantzeff.

Protector is even more important for those suffering from melasma, a chronic skin disease characterized by the appearance of dark spots on the face. To protect the skin, especially in patients suffering from melasma, the four main tips are:

And since melasma can worsen with prolonged exposure to visible light, the protection of which is given by the pigment/opacity, color is fundamental”, explains Dr. Jaqueline Zmijevski, dermatologist at the Institute Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD).

2. Forget about moisturizers and skin repair creams

Even if the skin becomes oilier in summer, the use of moisturizers is still important. The more intact the dermis is, the better it defends itself from environmental aggressors. “One of the biggest myths about hydrating the skin is that oily skin doesn’t need to be hydrated, or even can’t be, for fear that the habit will cause pimples and blackheads. However, greasiness is different from hydration: while the epidermis the former refers to excess sebum, the latter to the amount of water present in the skin”, explains dermatologist Mônica.

Furthermore, in summer more mineral salts are lost through sweat. Their absence can also leave the skin dehydrated, informs pharmacist Maria Eugênia Ayres.

3. Use of acids without guidance

The most effective ingredients in dermocosmetics are acids, which act like a wild card, treating everything from acne to wrinkles, blemishes and sagging skin. But, as summer approaches, it’s time to say goodbye or significantly reduce your use, especially that of retinoic acid. This is because they are photosensitive, which means they can stain or irritate your skin in the presence of sun or heat.

“They promote cell renewal, even tone and improved texture. Since they cause photosensitivity in the skin, their use must be guided by doctors to know the ideal concentration and frequency of the active ingredient for your skin,” says the doctor Dr. Mônica.

4. Drinking little water and drinking a lot of alcohol damage your skin

With sweat our need for water intake increases. “We must maintain hydration equal to at least 2 liters of water per day. If our body becomes dehydrated, to compensate it draws water from the periphery (even from the skin),” says Dr. Paola.

Furthermore, it is important to be careful not to drink too much beer, because drinking too much alcohol is dangerous and leads to dehydration of the entire body. “The result is dehydrated and dull skin. Furthermore, excess alcohol leads to an inflammatory process of the skin with the possibility of premature aging (appearance of wrinkles, sagging skin and decrease in collagen),” warns Paola.

5. Unregulated nutrition and protein breaks are also a problem

It is normal for heat to cause discomfort and nausea when eating, especially solid meals. Seasonal fruit is good for keeping your skin well nourished with antioxidants, but proteins must also be present and distributed throughout the day.
