In an interview with CARAS Brasil, oncologist Jorge Abissamra Filho explains Kate Middleton’s cancer remission
The Princess of Wales Kate Middleton (43) surprised to reveal that he is in remission from cancer. She shared the news while visiting patients at the hospital where she underwent treatment in 2024. In an interview with CARAS Brazilthe oncologist Jorge Abissamra Filho explains the topic and evaluates the monarch’s case.
Kate Middleton was treated for cancer in 2024. In January that year, she was rushed to London to undergo abdominal surgery and was hospitalized for 13 days. In March, Prince William’s wife announced she had cancer and began chemotherapy. In September the princess finally announced her remission.
Doctor Jorge Abissamra explains this new phase of Kate Middleton’s treatment and emphasizes that remission of the disease is not the same as a cure. However, this is a time when cancer cannot be identified by tests.
“Remission of cancer occurs when we can no longer observe it, neither in diagnostic imaging tests nor in tumor markers. Remission is when it no longer appears, when it has disappeared. Now, this is not always synonymous with cure, because often the Cancer may go into remission, but return after a period of time, months or years”explains.
Dr. Jorge makes it clear that cancer patients in remission must continue with frequent medical monitoring. Over the course of five years, several tests are ordered to see if the disease has returned.
“The patient in remission must maintain frequent medical follow-up. Ideally, in the first two years, every three months, and after two years, at least every six months. Until the age of five. The doctor will carry out this follow-up up, asking for diagnostic imaging tests, blood tests, in short to check if this tumor has actually returned”concludes the expert evaluating the case of Princess Kate Middleton.
