The physical therapist explains the difference between stretching and warming up

If you do any kind of physical activity, chances are you have already been asked about difference between stretching and warming up. Despite having similar names and apparently functioning as a kind of complement to the sport, the two modes are totally different. Each has its own goals and benefits.

Warming up, according to LĂvia Rodrigues, a physiotherapist specialized in the National Institute of Orthopedic Trauma (INTO) and a member of the Brazilian Association of Orthopedic Trauma Physiotherapy (ABRAFITO), is a preparatory activity for exercises that require intense effort. While stretching aims to improve flexibility and range of motion.

According to the expert, the warm-up should be done before any physical activity, to prepare the body and avoid injuries. “It increases blood circulation, bringing more oxygen to the muscles; it increases the heart and respiratory rate; it increases the temperature and blood pressure and lubricates the joints,” he explains.

Warm-up should be done with repeated, low-intensity movements. It is also important that it is conducted in accordance with the exercise to be practiced later. That is, if you are going to run, it is ideal that you start with a light walk, evolve at a trot and only then start running.

Stretching, as explained by Livia, is important for increasing body flexibility and promoting greater freedom of movement. However, it shouldn’t be done before strength activities, such as weight training, for example. Stretching performed improperly can degrade performance, delay goal achievement, and even cause injury.

“After the exercise you can do a slight stretch with the aim of relaxing and not gaining amplitude. But the ideal is to do it at another time. Then yes, more intensely, in order to gain amplitude”, advises the physiotherapist.

“The important thing is to do a warm-up before the exercise and a relaxation at the end, so that the body gradually slows down. The stretching should be done another day,” concludes LĂvia.
