The Los Angeles region was hit by forest fires again this Thursday (23). The climate is even more worrying, as many residents have still not been able to return to their homes since the region was hit by fire earlier this year. In addition to the Palisades and Eaton/Pasadena outbreaks, a new outbreak called Hughes has already consumed more than 150 square miles. At least 31 thousand people had to abandon their homes.
The audiovisual producer Luciana Brafmann She is Brazilian and has lived in Los Angeles for 22 years. He tells Grupo Perfil Brasil exclusively how he saw the damage caused by the fire up close.
“I have never seen such a devastating situation”he states. Authorities suspect a spark caused the fire. However, the risk of fires developing is extremely high in Southern California because rainfall is low. Thus, these extremely flammable conditions were already dangerous when the region’s seasonal Santa Anna winds created gusts of 100 miles per hour in some areas.
How do fires start?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies the fires as a natural disaster. However, only 10-15% of forest fires occur spontaneously. The remaining 85-90% derives from human causes, such as occur in the fields and from the lack of attention when throwing, for example, cigarettes in wooded areas. In addition, of course, to arson.
Naturally occurring forest fires can be caused by dry weather. The vegetation stops being green and becomes flammable. Therefore, all it takes is a spark – in the form of lightning, arson, a downed power line, a campfire or a lit cigarette – to start a fire.
For Luciana, the fires that have devastated Los Angeles highlight the urgency of rethinking our actions in the face of climate change and environmental management.
“While we cannot reverse the warming already caused, it is possible to mitigate its impacts. This involves dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions, encouraging clean energy sources and adopting sustainable practices in sectors such as agriculture, transport and industry.”
