Helping others and solidarity are feelings that motivate volunteering
Data from the latest Brazil Volunteering Survey Developing Social Investments (IDIS) and DataFolha, held in 2021, showed that more than 55 million Brazilians do volunteer work. The study is conducted every 10 years and indicates a growing evolution compared to the number of the last two editions: in 2011 (25%) and 2001 (18%). Furthermore, at least 18 hours a month are dedicated to volunteering (three times more than a decade ago). Another piece of information is that 56% of the adult population says they do or have done some voluntary activity in their life. At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, for example, and with individuals in social isolation, 47% of respondents commented on increased volunteering, with resource distribution (61%) being the most common. However, during this period, 21% began to carry out voluntary online psychological work and education-oriented works.
Last year, during the heavy rains that plagued Rio Grande Do Sul, several famous personalities traveled to the state to do volunteer work with flood victims. Doctors and former BBBs Thelma Assis, Marcela McGowan AND Amanda Meirelles They worked voluntarily at the Nossa Senhora Das Gracias hospital, in the city of Canoas. Surfer Pedro Scooby helped save people and animals.
The doctor Ana Claudia Quintana Arans (CRM-SP 76.851), a geriatrics specialist with advanced palliative care and postgraduate training in psychological mourning interventions, reflects that when thousands of people donate their time to help other individuals, a beauty in the world is perceived in the world in which we Often forget to look more carefully. For her, deciding what to do over time must be a wise choice. “This is not a moral lesson, but there are many people who stop watching a movie, reading a book to put their hands and hearts into what they believe, without receiving anything for it,” he observes.
According to the expert, what is gained from volunteering cannot be kept in the bank, since it is experiences, experiences, connections and opportunities to contact other realities. As the doctor points out, if the volunteer finds something that touches him and dedicates himself to it, it could be the moment when he has embraced his life purpose. “Those who have not found the opportunity to volunteer, is my advice: look around and be more aware of the pains of the world.
