Everything you need to know to take more care of your pet

Much feels that castration is an important attitude towards the control of the population of pets, but it is also an investment in the health and well -being of pets. Surgery prevents the disease, improves the quality of life and even reduces the number of abandoned animals on the streets. So, to better understand the topic and respond to all doubts about it, we talked to the veterinarian Mariana Tadoni Moura Campos, with the homeless of the NGOs and their dogs (Mrsc), which has already performed more than 4,000 castration castings in vulnerable pets.

Why is the castrating so important?

Many tutors still have doubts about the need for castration and resist surgery. But the veterinarian clarifies that the procedure goes well beyond avoiding unwanted offspring. “Castration is mainly important because it avoids a series of diseases, such as some types of neoplasms, as well as being the only way to reduce the overpopulation of homeless animals and vulnerability,” says Mariana.

Brazil has millions of abandoned animals and the only real way to reduce this number is through castration. “Each castrate domestic pet represents fewer puppies born in precarious conditions and less suffering on the streets”, underlines Mariana.

In addition, “castrated animals live more and better”, as the veterinarian points out, which explains that surgery has a direct impact on animal health. “In females, we reduce the risk of breast cancer up to 95% when castration occurs before the first heat. Furthermore, we prevent serious infections such as piometra and hormonal problems such as psychological pregnancy,” he says.

In males, the benefits are also fantastic. “Castration prevents changes in prostate such as hyperplasia and tumors, as well as eliminating the risk of testicle cancer,” he adds.

How many months should the animal castrated?

The ideal age for castration can vary according to the context, according to Mariana. “For animals from homelessness, which are great risks and can reproduce without control, we indicate the castration of two months of life, called pediatric castration”, explains the expert.

For pets who live at home, it replies that surgery is generally recommended after the vaccination protocol has exceeded about five months. “There are exceptions, but this must be analyzed individually,” he says.

Can every animal be castrated?

In general, the answer is yes. “The only contraindication occurs when the animal has a health problem that makes the anesthetic risk greater than the benefits of surgery,” warns Mariana. For this reason, preoperative exams are essential to guarantee a safe procedure.

What are the risks and side effects?

Of course, each surgery involves a certain risk, but the expert guarantees that, in the case of castration, the benefits exceed concerns. “The procedure is safe, provided that the animal undergoes previous exams and has a real follow -up veterinary,” he says.

Among the postoperative care, Mariana indicates that the tutor should administer the indicated drugs, prevent the race or skip the animal in the first days and maintain the surgical wound clean and protected.

Castration changes the behavior of pets?

This is a very common question among the tutors. According to Mariana, some changes can occur, but they are not radical. “Animals tend to become less territorial and often more calm. In the case of males, the need to mark the territory and the desire to go out to look for females, which reduces risks such as running and struggles,” he concludes.
