A Polish study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry stresses that physical therapy and physical activities are essential factors for the treatment of cancer patients. The article underlines that the individualization of physical therapy programs has a positive effect on improving the patient.
According to the study, patients in the advanced phases of cancer should receive programs that include advice and a personalized exercise program. This therapeutic approach contributes considerably to mental health, improving the somatic and psychological state of patients.
Benefits of physiotherapy
The physical benefits also play an essential role in the recovery of cancer and deserves to be highlighted this April 8, World Cancer Day. The physiotherapist Juliana Thomé, a master in neuroscience and behavior of the University of San Paolo, explains that by performing an individualized biomechanical evaluation and by applying adequate treatment, it is possible to “reprogram” the brain and recover the movements that the disease has limited, due to chemotherapy or possible intervention.
“Physiotherapy brings the quality of life and independence to the patient. In the face of the sequences brought by the treatment of cancer, a specialized and individualized treatment reports the lost characteristics. Therefore, the patient sees that he is managing to carry out his activities and does not depend on the help. This brings direct psychological benefits and helps in the recovery process”, explains Juliana.
The neuroscientist strengthens that monitoring and release of the oncologist, who should perform the treatment together with the physiotherapist, observing the restrictions for each case. “All types of physical activity release Endorfina, which contribute to mental health and the recovery of the patient. However, assistance and high intensity activities should be observed are not indicated for these cases,” he warns.
Brain reprogramming
The expert explains that when a patient undergoes surgery or faces intense pain, it is common for the body to make a postural compensation to relieve discomfort. Several sensory systems can be influenced by treatments and surgical interventions, generating bad posture and, consequently, more pain.
“It is necessary to examine posture and movement and evaluate how it is possible to adapt the body so that this natural compensation do not cause other pain. A biomechanical evaluation performed by a physiotherapist can identify these changes, create the body and relieve physical discomfort during the treatment of cancer. With this, the patient can avoid and reduce the muscles and have less movement limits”, says the neuroscientist.
