Bolsonaro has lived with intestinal problems since he was stabbed in the 2018 elections; He said the current image “was the most serious” from the accident.
Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has published to X Saturday (12/04) who should undergo a new surgery after being transferred from the hospital where he is hospitalized for an intestinal hospital in Natal.
“In Brasilia or San Paolo, after my transfer, I will probably suffer a new surgery,” said the former president.
“We spend our lives ready for any battle: politics, legal, electoral, physics too … but sometimes what breaks down is not the enemy from the outside, is our own body,” said Bolsonaro in X.
The former president claims to have heard from Dr. Claurio Birolini, who accompanies him, that “this was the most serious picture of the attack that almost took my life in 2018”.
“I am stable, taken up and once again surrounded by competent professionals, whom I can only thank,” he said.
He said that “I will soon return to fight for the amnesty of political prisoners and a freer and prosperous country, as the Brazilian people deserve”.
Bolsonaro should be transferred from Christmas to Bolsonaro later this Saturday.
According to the medical report published early in the afternoon from the Rio Grande Hospital, where he is attended, the former president had a reduction in the relaxation staff and is stable.
The transfer to Brasilia was Bolsonaro’s decision, together with the family and his personal doctor, to maintain closeness to family members, according to the note.
Bolsonaro had to be in the hospital in a hasty way on Friday (11/4) after having had severe pain in the region of the abdomen.
He participated in an event in the city of Santa Cruz, Rio Grande do Norte, and participated in the municipal hospital of AluĂzio Bezerra. He was then transferred by helicopter to the Rio Grande Hospital in the capital of the State.
According to the relationships of people close to Bolsonaro, in the last few days he has complained about intestinal discomfort.
The doctor of the former president Antonio Luiz Macedo told Cnn that Bolsonaro presented, in addition to pain, difficulty eating and digestion, due to intestinal relaxation. The image is characterized by a swelling of the abdomen, which can be derived from inflammation.
In the newsletter issued by the hospital on Saturday, however, the medical team said that Bolsonaro has an excellent mood and remains without analgesia.
“Follows venous hydration through the central catheter, using parenteral nutrition, the maintenance of antibiotic therapy previously established, with open nasogastric probe and the regular use of other prescribed drugs,” says the note.
“All vital signs and complementary exams remain within normality, without clinical complications to date.”

The Minister of Health Alexandre Padilha used the image of Bolsonaro in an ambulance of the Emergency Care Service (Samu) furniture on Friday, to enhance the program, implemented in 2003, during the first term of Lula (PT).
“Everyone knows it: in an emergency time, he calls Samu 192! Care of emergency to save lives from north to south. Created by President Lula, to all Brazilians, bigger and faster! Long life to the Sus!” Padilha wrote in X publishing (ex Twitter).
Previously, the helicopter who transported Bolsonaro between Santa Cruz and Natal was provided by the governor of Rio Grande do Norte, Fatima Bezerra (PT).
Since he was the victim of a knife attack in the 2018 election campaign, the former president had some episodes of intestinal obstruction-when an extract from this organ has blocked and had to be hospitalized to take treatments.
He suffered five abdominal surgical interventions, three of which delicate, according to his medical team.
Bolsonaro has participated in campaigns and public events that defend the amnesty in those who are condemned for the attacks of January 8, 2024 in Brasilia.
Recently, he himself has become a defendant and will be tried by the Supreme Federal Court (Stf).
Understand below what intestinal obstruction is and because it usually happens in cases like Bolsonaro.
What is intestinal obstruction?
As the name suggests, the image is related to the blocking of part of the small intestine or the large intestine.
This obstruction prevents the passage of food and digestive enzymes which, throughout the intestine, are involved in a series of processes to extract nutrients and discard what will not be used by the body, forming the feces.
The gastroenterologist and surgeon Flávio Quilici, professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of the Campinas, explains that the intestines have a structure similar to that of pipes or pipes.
“If you trample the tube or enter a stone inside, it causes a clog that does not let the water pass,” he says.
The same reasoning applies to our digestive tract: if something is padded inside, there is no way that the content has transit through the organs and go ahead.
What does intestinal obstruction cause?
This clog can be caused by a series of factors, such as inflammatory diseases (Crohn and diverticulitis houses), tumors and even dry and hard foods (such as Jabuticaba seeds, for example).
In the specific case of Bolsonaro, the experts listened to by the BBC News Brazil evaluate that the picture is actually related to the various surgical interventions that he had to pass after suffering stabbed in 2018.
According to Dr. LĂşcius Lucas, head of the Syrian-Lebanian hospital surgical center in Brasilia, the operations in the abdomen lead to a healing process, which can involve the loss of the intestinal movement.
“To work with satisfaction, the digestive tract moves constantly. And this mobility can be compromised by the formation of the healing process after surgical procedures”, contextualizes.
A more “rigid” intestine with some healed structures that stick to each other, therefore it can undergo a sort of turning point, which partially or completely obstructs the passage of food – is as if the previous example tube folded completely.
It is interesting to note that this is a probable hypothesis in the case of the president, but has yet to be confirmed by the professionals who accompany him.
What are the symptoms of intestinal obstruction?
This problem may gradually evolve and give only more blunt signals since the situation is more serious.
“Sobbits are a symptom of obstruction, especially when it happens in some regions of the small intestine,” says Lucas.
This condition is also usually related to swelling and severe pain in the belly.
Quilici says that it is possible to detect intestinal obstruction in the physical examination, made in the office itself, especially when the patient has a history of surgery in the region of the abdomen.
“We can also do an X -ray or a tomography to find this obstruction,” he adds.
These tests are routine when a patient is hospitalized with the symptoms of Bolsonaro, according to the doctors listened to by BBC News Brazil.

What is done after diagnosis?
Depending on the cause, gravity and the place where obstruction has occurred, the doctor opts for conservative treatment or surgery.
Lucas explains that in less serious cases it is possible to resort to fasting, to some specific drugs and some less invasive procedures, such as the aspiration of the fluid accumulated due to the impact.
The patient is then monitored for a while until his situation improves.
When the block of the digestive tube is larger, it is usually necessary to open the belly to cancel the obstruction or remove the structure that blocks and plays the intestine.
Quilici and Lucas agree that surgery is relatively simple and is usually not related to complications or a very difficult postoperative.
“When the operation consists in canceling only the fold in the intestine, the recovery is fast and the image usually evolves very well,” says Lucas.
“Now, if the diagnosis and intervention require a lot of time, there is a risk that the intestinal region concerned will undergo a necrosis, which requires the removal of this piece”, adds Quilici.
