Testosterone should not be used for menopause, weight loss or tiredness, he warns experts

The hormone has been mistakenly suitable for issues such as lack of libido and rejuvenation, putting women’s health at risk

The medical entities have issued a joint note to warn the risks of the indiscriminate use of testosterone in women. In the document, the experts warn: the only indication recognized for the administration of hormones in the female public is the treatment of the hypoalic disorder of sexual sexual desire (Tdsh) and but only after a careful medical evaluation.

The warning was issued by the Brazilian company of Endocrinology and Metabology (Sbem), of the Brazilian Federation of the Associations of Gynecology and midwife (February) and the Department of Cardiology Women of the Brazilian Cardiology Society (SBC). In the note, experts deny myths and have scientific evidence on the hormone in the female body.

Sbem Director Clayton Macedo explains that the note was created due to the growing testosterone prescription for women. The hormone was erroneously suitable for causes such as weight loss, muscle mass gain, rejuvenation and relief of the symptoms of menopause. The increase in libido, without clinical necessity, is also one of the indications. None of these indications, however, has scientific support.

There is no low testosterone, not even in menopause

According to entities, the idea that menopause causes a sudden decrease in testosterone levels is wrong. The hormone begins to gradually decrease for 30 years, regardless of menopause. Therefore, for women at this stage, “the indicated hormonal treatment remains estrogen and progesterone”, says the note.

Furthermore, the very concept of “low testosterone” does not exist, As highlighted by the gynecologist Maria Celeste Wender, president of Febrasgo, in an interview with Estodão. In this sense, it is not advisable to take exams to control hormonal levels.

“The exams are used only to identify high levels, which can indicate hyperandrogenism, usually associated with conditions such as ovarian tumors, problems of adrenal glands or polychistic ovary syndrome. In addition to this, there is no justification for the exam. If someone says the opposite, it can suspect,” said Maria Celeste.

No approval from Anvisa

Currently, there is no testosterone formulation in Brazil approved by National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) For use in women.

“The only testosterone approved from a commercial point of view is for male use, to a five -time concentration of how much the woman can use. Since there is an exception of the indication for the therapy with hypothetical sexual desire, therefore we use the manipulation of the personalized pharmacy”, explains Machado.

Hormonal systems

According to the note, the use of subcutaneous systems, the “dots” so called and the manipulated formulas, often sold with appeals such as “bioidical” or “natural”.

These products, the entities say, “have unpredictable pharmacokinetic, lack of quality control and increased risk of side effects”.

The only type of hormonal system that is considered safe and released in Brazil is Levororgestrel, approved as a contraceptive.

Use for aesthetic or anti -maj purposes

The entities strengthen that there is no scientific support for the use of aesthetic purposes, for a greater lean mass, weight loss, improvement of the arrangement or anti -aging effects.

Relationship between testosterone and hypoactive sexual desire

THE TDSH is the only existing recommendation for the use of testosterone. But the indication of the hormone is not so simple. Before any intervention, it is necessary to evaluate a series of factors that can also influence sexual desire.

“The patient can be mourned, financial difficulties, relational problems or problems of mental health. It is also important to consider a story of sexual violence “, Exemplified mastologist Rosemar Macedo, president of the National Febrasgo Mastology Commission.

In addition, use should be taken into consideration only if the patient is already replaced with progesterone and estrogen (or only estrogen, in the case of women without uterus), since these hormones also play an important role in the regulation of libido. Most of the time, using them already solves the problem. Testosterone should be the last option, according to Rosemar.

What are the risks?

There is no disagreement between experts that testosterone can provide a sense of well -beingEven when it is not used in the best way. The muscles grow, libido increases – none of this is questionable. But the account comes – and often, silently.

The risks include impairment of the liver, increased cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as possible sad thrombotic and cardiovascular events such as arrhythmias, heart attacks and strokes.

“That’s why medical societies strengthen that there is no support to use testosterone with these aesthetic or performance purposes,” says Macedo.
