United States and Israel discussed the possibility that Washington would lead a temporary post -war administration Gaza, according to five people who are familiar with the topic.
The “high level” consultations focus on a transition government led by an American authority that would supervise Gaza until it was demilitarized and stabilized and a Palestinian administration practicable have arisen, the sources said.
According to the discussions, which remain preliminary, there would be no fixed program for the duration of this administration used in the United States, which would depend on the on -site situation, according to the five sources.
The sources, who spoke with anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the negotiations, compared the proposal with the provisional authority of the coalition in Iraq, established by Washington in 2003, shortly after the shaded invasion of the United States that overturned Saddam Hussein.
The authority was seen by many Iraqis as an employment force and transferred power to a temporary government of Iraq in 2004, after not having contained a growing insurrection.
Other countries would be invited to participate in the United States led by Gaza, the sources said without identifying which one. According to them, the government would have Palestinian technocrats, but would exclude the Islamic group Hamas and the Palestinian authority, which has a limited authority in occupied West Bank.
The Islamic group Hamas, who has been governor since 2007, sparked the current war when his militants invaded the communities of South Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and capturing another 251.
The sources said that it was not yet clear if an agreement could be reached. The discussions had not passed to the point of considering who the main functions could assume, they said.
The sources did not specify which side the proposal presented nor did they provide further details on the conversations.
In response to Reuters’ questions, a spokesman for the State Department did not comment directly on whether there were discussions with Israel on a temporary authority led by the United States to Gaza, saying that they could not speak of ongoing negotiations.
“We want peace and immediate liberation from the hostages,” said the spokesperson, adding that: “The pillars of our approach remain still: supporting Israel, supporting peace”.
The office of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to comment.
In an interview with Sky News Arabia in April, owned by the United Arab Emirates, the Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said he believed that there would have been a “transition period” after the conflict, in which a council of international administrators, including the “moderate Arab countries”, the supervision of Gaza, with the Palestinians who operate under their guide.
“We are not trying to control people’s civil life in Gaza. Our only interest in the Gaza Strip is security,” he said, not to mention which countries believed would have been involved. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to a request for further comments.
Ismail al-Thawabta, director of the Gaza government office, managed by Hamas, has rejected the idea of an administration led by the United States or any foreign government, stating that the Palestinian people of Gaza should choose their sovereigns.
The Palestinian authority did not respond to a commentary request.
