Coffee, a popular drink among the Brazilians, helps to stimulate the mind and gives more energy and arrangement. But, like everything else in life, it can hurt and cause health problems.

After all, what exactly happens when we exaggerate in caffeine?

“Excessive consumption of high concentration of caffeine drinks, such as coffee, can cause a series of symptoms, such as palpitations, handmade or body, intense anxiety, insomnia and agitation”, says Amanda Figueiredo, clinical nutritionist of USP.

At very high doses, caffeine can overload the cardiovascular system, increase blood pressure and irritate the gastrointestinal system, causing nausea, reflux, stomach sore or diarrhea.

Each person responds differently to caffeine, some are more sensitive and others more tolerant. “This individual sensitivity depends on factors such as genetics, consumer habits, age, use of drugs and even the biological rhythm of each”, explains the expert.

However, there is a general recommendation: avoid caffeine consumption, such as coffee, at least 6 hours before going to bed. “This is because the hemivity of caffeine in the body (i.e. the time leading to the body eliminates half of the substance) varies from 4 to 6 hours. Caffeine hinders sleep because it blocks the action of adenosine, a natural neurotransmitter that induces sleep and promotes relaxation”, concludes.
