The vapus is as dangerous as the traditional cigarette or more; understand

The electronic damage of the cigarette (vapodization) may appear much faster than the consequences of the traditional cigarette

Marketing, import and advertising of Electronic cigarettes It is prohibited in Brazil. However, its use is quite popular, especially among young people, who usually call the device vape.

According to an intelligence study in Research and Consulting (IPEC), the number of users of electronic cigarettes quadrupled from 2018 to 2022. And, according to a survey published by Unesp (Paulista State University), most of them are young: 9.7% of people between 18 and 24 have already experienced the Vapo Vapo. In the interval between 35 and 49 years of age, this percentage drops to 3.3%.

These data are a great notice for public health, since electronic cigarettes can be as harmful to the traditional version. The same research published by Unesp highlighted the high amount of sugar present in the liquids that provide electronic cigarettes to provide fruit aromas. These substances can cause caries and periodontal diseases. In addition, the device can cause other serious health problems.

“We must focus on our efforts to change the scenario as we did with traditional smoke: in 2000, 30% of Brazilians were smoker. In 2021 it was only 9%, one of the little ones in the world”, says Dr. Rafael Canineu, Geriatra and Medical Director of Heliança Saúde Health Analytics.

Electronic cigarette risks

According to the doctor, smoke generates harmful effects on health that are often perceived only in old age. Among these consequences, it is possible to mention:

  • Chronic lung disease (bronchitis and emphysema);
  • Various types of cancer (lung, mouth, larynx, pharynx, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, bladder, cervix, stomach and liver);
  • Coronary heart disease (angina and heart attack);
  • Cerebrovascular diseases (stroke).

However, in the case of electronic cigarette, health problems may appear much earlier. “Unlike the conventional cigarette, which sometimes takes 20 or 30 years to express diseases in the user, the cigarette, who promised safety, was able to quickly kill young people,” explains dr. Jaqueline Scholz, a specialist doctor at the SBC (Brazilian cardiology company) in actions against smoking.

According to the expert, the electronic cigarette can induce the body to dangerous inflammatory responses. “Many times, when inflammation occurs on the wall of the endothelium, which covers the arteries, it can be wounded and trigger acute cardiovascular events such as heart attack and acute coronary syndrome,” he says.

Youth lung

In a context in which most of electronic cigarette users are young, it is noteworthy that the human body is completely around the age of 19, that is, with some variants depending on the case. This means that the damage to the device can be even more harmful in young people.

The data of the World Health Organization (WHO) warn the evils of the use of nicotine in people under the age of 20. According to the organization, teenagers who use these devices are more likely to become smokers in adulthood, leading to other serious health problems.

Ban on vaporization

A report published in 2021 by the entity showed that 84 countries have no measures against the proliferation of this type of product. On the other hand, 32 countries prohibit the sale of these vapors, including Mexico, India, Argentina and Brazil. In addition, another 79 has adopted at least one measure to limit its use, such as the ban on advertising, as happens in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

“Electronic cigarettes are prohibited, not regulated or controlled. This is a problem that should not be ignored. This is because the consumption of cigarettes kills millions of individuals every year and disadvantages longevity. To ensure a healthier awareness, with the awareness of this progress of Dr.”. Canineu.
