The Brazilian association of neuro-suboplmology (Abno) published a notice on Sunday 28, on the risk of methanol optical neuropathy, a serious illness that can cause irreversible blindness.

Symptoms of contamination
The symptoms of methanol poisoning usually appear in 12 and 24 hours after the ingestion of the substance and can arise first when the quantity is large. According to Abno, they include headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, mental confusion and above all sudden vision or cloudy blindness.
The diagnosis is made considering the clinical history and the results of the blood and images tests, which help to confirm the intoxication. The treatment should be immediate and aims to prevent the body from transforming methanol into even more toxic substances.
“For this, antidotes (such as venous ethanol), baking soda of sodium to correct the acidity of the blood, vitamins (folic/foline acid) and, in the most serious cases, the hemodialysis to remove the poison,” states the opinion signed by the obexes Mario Ribeiro Monteiro and Eric Pinheiro de Andrade, can be used.
