A new balance of the Ministry of Health, released on Sunday 5, reported that the number of methanol poisoning notifications after drinking alcohol has risen to 225 in Brazil.
To date, 16 cases have been confirmed and 209 are under investigation. Fifteen people who ingested adulterated drinks with methanol died. Given this scenario, is there any alcohol considered safe?
“The distilled drinks would be more worrying, especially if the observed cases are due to incorrect distilled distilles. In any case, we could consider that the drinks provided by large producers with registration and inspection are safe, because they undergo quality and rigid control tests. The highest risk is in illegal beverages”
How to identify the presence of methanol in distilled drinks?
Methanol cannot be identified with the naked eye, neither by the smell nor by taste. “The detection is possible only with a specific laboratory analysis, such as chromatography. Some colorimetric tests are being developed, but they are not solutions made for the final consumer,” he adds.
Can beer less the risk of being mixed with methanol?
According to the race, beer, of course, has a very low methanol content and is a lower value product.
“Although not immune, it is less falsified. The cans are more difficult to adulterate than the bottles, which can be easily closed and reused again. However, there are reports of falsification of the more expensive beer. The safer consumes reliable suppliers,” says the expert.
Thiago says that the beer production process practically does not generate methanol in relevant quantities. “It is a fermented and unstillated drink and the levels that can rise are insignificant for health,” he adds.
