Scarcity of breast milk in hospitals; Donation is essential to save the lives of premature babies.
In the public hospitals of São Paulo, the shortage of breast milk it forced medical teams to make difficult decisions. Last Sunday (05), Fantastico showed in a report where not all premature babies are admitted to hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) receive essential food.
“We have to choose which child will or will not receive breast milk,” reports Patrícia Terrível, coordinator of a milk bank.
In the hospital in question only seven out of 13 newborns receive breast milk. With 12 liters available, the question would require about 40 liters more to serve all premature babies. The situation worsens as the holiday period approaches, when it is necessary to reinforce stocks.

The importance of breast milk for newborns
Breast milk is the only food that provides all the nutrients necessary for the development of the newborn, and is recommended exclusively up to six months of age, explains pediatrician Tiemi Yoshida, in a previous interview with MinhaVida. In addition to nourishing, breast milk strengthens the body, improves neurological and immunological development, preparing the baby to face life outside the mother’s womb.
