The American artist was very close to the King of Pop and reveals in his recently released book that his colleague did not have a reputation for being very hygienic

Lionel Richie just released the book Trulywhich tells the story of his career as a successful singer, songwriter and producer in music. Naturally, one of the icons included in the work, which was released abroad on September 30, is michael jacksonwith whom he was very close at a certain point in his career.

In one of the passages in the book (via NME), Richie makes an inconfidence and reveals that MJ did not have a reputation for being very hygienic. He got to the point where he earned the nickname “smelly” (something like “fedorento”, in Portuguese).

According to the American artist, who was part of the group Commodores and also had a solo career, Michael Jackson was constantly made fun of by him and his producer Quincy Jones. In the end, MJ also ended up joining in the fun.

Richie tells it in the book (transcription via People):

“Michael was laughing too, realizing he didn’t realize he hadn’t changed or washed his clothes in a few days… We all have our quirks.”

Lionel Richie says that Michael Jackson was almost always with his clothes on, as he had a routine of many commitments, and ended up being “robbed” when he sent some items to the cleaners.

“Everyone kept something as a souvenir. He just got into the habit of wearing the same underwear until they were unusable.”

Michael Jackson’s tracks

When Michael Jackson visited him, Lionel Richie remembers that the star ended up leaving his tracks:

“Whenever Michael came to visit me, he was wearing anything—jeans and a T-shirt. And the jeans were either hanging off his body or too short to be jeans and, well, smelly.

He ends by remembering a specific story:

“I would take him home and he was kind and grateful. As soon as I got home, I walked by the living room and noticed that there on the carpet was a pair of Michael Jackson’s underwear and his old, ratty jeans. Just lying there like roadkill. What do I do but laugh? MJ was here.”
