Kiwi is one of the most nutritious fruits that offers numerous health benefits when included in your daily diet. It has a good concentration of vitamin C, in some cases higher than that of oranges.
The nutrient is essential for strengthening the immune system, helping the body fight viruses, bacteria and infections.
Dr. Isolda Prado, nutritionist and director of ABRAN (Brazilian Association of Nutrology), listed the benefits of the fruit:
• Rich in vitamin C, K, E, folic acid and potassium — strengthens the immune system, skin (collagen), eye and heart health.
• Fiber (soluble and insoluble) and actinidin (digestive enzyme), It has the potential to aid digestion and may reduce constipation.
• It is one of the fruits with the highest serotonin contentprecursor of melatonin, involved in the regulation of sleep.
• May help with cardiovascular health, for its potential action in improving cholesterol, blood pressure and has a protective antioxidant action.
What is the best way to preserve nutrients?
The best way to preserve the maximum amount of nutrients is to consume fresh kiwis and, if tolerable, with the peel, which contains extra fiber and antioxidants.
“When fresh, it is best to store it in the refrigerator, firm and away from other fruits that release ethylene (such as apples and bananas), as this speeds up ripening,” suggests the doctor.
To maintain nutrients for a longer period, it can be frozen. “It’s a convenient option and preserves flavor and most nutrients, making it great for vitamins and smoothies,” he concludes.
