At 92, an Italian runs like a twenty-year-old: here is the athlete who challenges time

At 92, Italian Emma Maria Mazzenga is living proof that age and limitations may not mean the same thing. With a career marked by determination and a love of athletics, he continues to break records and attract the attention of scientists seeking to understand his unusual aging.

Emma started running at 19, stopped for a few decades and returned to the track at 53. She hasn’t stopped since then. Today, her muscle fibers are comparable to those of a 20-year-old woman, and her cardiovascular health rivals that of someone half her age.

He has maintained his at-home workout routine during the pandemic. He competed with much younger athletes and continued to defy the biological clock with impressive vigor. At the beginning of 2024, in Padua, he set the new world record in the 200 meter dash in the W90 category.

Even after suffering an injury, Emma couldn’t sit still. She returned to training by walking and cycling, catching her breath with the same discipline that brought her to the top. During the winter he trains at the Palaindoor; in the summer, at the Colbachini Stadium, under the guidance of coach Daniele Aloe, of the master team of Cus Padova. “With consistency, I hope to improve and feel as strong as I did last year,” he says.

Emma’s passion for the slopes goes back a long time. Between 1956 and 1961 he already competed for Cus Padova, participating in the 100, 200, 400 and even 800 metres, coming in fourth place in the national championship in Rome. After getting married in 1963, he took a break from the sport, but returned in 1986 and never stopped.

For the athlete, the secret is simplicity: keeping the body moving, adopting healthy habits and, above all, not losing the passion for running. At 92, she continues to challenge time with the same light in the eyes of a just starting athlete.
