The Sebrae initiative, in collaboration with Embrapa, allows local producers to develop large plantations without causing damage to the environment
In Marajo IslandTHE Support and innovate the project helps families reforest burned areas and invest in agricultural production using sustainable techniques. The initiative, therefore, guarantees the livelihood of local residents by preserving nature.
Discover the reforestation project
The program was created in 2022 by Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Businesses (Sebrae) in collaboration with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Society (Embrapa). According to the organizations, aims to empower rural producers with sustainable growing practices, such as Agroforestry System (SAF).
In an interview with “Agency of Brazil”farmer and fisherman Ronildo Pacheco he said the technique significantly increased his production power. This is because it allows us to preserve the soil by generating fruit without causing environmental impacts, as well as restoring forests and recovering degraded areas.
“If you plant pineapple like a normal farmer, every year you have to create a field. Every year you have to drill a patch of bush and burn it, because you don’t have a tractor to prepare the soil. Agroforestry allows me to plant it again in the same place, without using fire. And it buys more time during the year, because the pineapple will only grow once a year. Instead of monoculture, I will have up to five harvests a year,” explained.
The initiative changes reality
In addition to Pacheco, in the region, 30 other families use this method to support themselves. Together, they formed the Monsarás Agricultural and Artisanal Fishing Cooperative (COOPAPAM)a group that not only promotes reforestation, but also raises awareness among other producers.
The Sustenta and Inova Project also helps family and indigenous farmers Paragominasin the southeast of TO. In the municipality, locals use the practice known as “field without fire”. She replaces THE traditional slash and burn method with alternatives such as proper soil management, intercropping and the use of cover crops.
According to program data, agricultural production has doubled since sustainable techniques were implemented. In crops such as cassava and cereals, the increase reached 400%. Thanks to these results, last year the initiative was selected among the 80 projects financed by European Union in 65 countries to complement the recently launched international publication “Intelligent innovation for development through agricultural research” (DeSIRAin its acronym in English).
