Tooth tattoo: discover the risks of the new Chinese trend

According to experts, this trend can cause irreparable damage to your smile.

Summary

The dental tattoo trend in China worries experts, who warn of irreversible damage to teeth due to cosmetic wear and poor procedures.

A new trend among young Chinese has gone viral on social media: dental tattoos, which feature words, symbols and designs. Fashion divides opinions even among the most ‘prefrentex’. Dentists have already reached a consensus: the practice is dangerous and can leave irreparable damage to teeth.

The procedure is offered by dental clinics in several regions of China, which use the novelty as a strategy to attract customers. According to the portal, some institutions even offer free registrations Shangyou News.

The accessories work via crowns, which are generally used to restore damaged or weakened teeth. The process is as follows: the professional makes scratches on the patients’ teeth. Then, on the basis of the damaged structure, prepare a mold that now fits into the rubber. The value varies between 1,000 and 2,000 yuan (R$750 to R$1,500).

Dentists, however, warn of possible risks. According to Dr. Mayara Oliveira, specialist in restorative and aesthetic dentistry, wear and tear of the aesthetic structure should never occur for aesthetic reasons, as the damage is irreversible. “Any intervention of this kind should only be carried out when there is a real clinical indication, such as in cases where the patient has already lost part of the tooth structure,” he said in an interview with Earth.

In addition to wearing down your teeth, fashion can cause bad breath and cause gum infections and inflammation.

According to her, the problem is not the designs themselves, but the application of a crown unnecessarily or with dubious procedures. This is because, if the piece that is inserted into the patient’s mouth has adaptation problems, for example, the gums can become injured and the teeth can accumulate food in the mouth, which creates, in addition to bad breath, the possibility of inflammation and infections.

“Once wear and tear occurs, it’s over. There’s no way to recover,” Oliveira explains. Now Dr. Sergio Bossi Botta, president of the dental section of the Regional Council of Dentistry of São Paulo (Crosp), recalls that another problem is linked to the thickness of the resin-molded veneer, which is made of a less resistant material. As a result, the piece can easily break when chewed.

“Over time, the use of toothpaste and food acids will cause the adhesive to wear away, losing its color and shape,” warns the dentist.

Explain that cosmetic modification of teeth is nothing new. Ancient civilizations, such as the Mayans and Egyptians, already used gemstone inlays on their teeth as status symbols. There are currently safer ways to beautify your smile, such as grillz and dental piercing.
