When they appear benign, tumors can be treated and healed quickly. In malignant cases, the early diagnosis of the disease to increase the chances of recovery in the animal.
And just like in humans, cancer in pets is characterized by a disordered growth of cells in the body. In the case of breasts, it is a multiplication that occurs in the mammary glands. It is common in women, due to the production of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.
“When females go into heat, of course, they end up having a big hormonal rush in their body, which can even lead to cancer,” explains veterinarian Dr. Nicole Cherobim.
However, The disease can also affect male dogs. In other words, the campaign is essential for prevention for both sexes.
How to Identify Breast Cancer in Pets?
According to Dr. Nicole Cherobim it is very important to pay close attention to the appearance of possible symptoms, such as swelling or dilation of the breast, frequent pain or discomfort in the region, presence of secretions and nodules in the mammary glands. “It is worth remembering that it is not always possible to see the signs of cancer with the naked eye, which further increases the importance of carrying out regular clinical examinations on your pet,” explains the veterinarian.
Prevention
There are no ways to completely prevent the onset of the disease. While, early castration and before the animal’s first heat prevents hormonal changes that influence the development of these tumors.
“Another form of prevention is to periodically submit the animal to a veterinarian, where it will be examined. This way, if it shows signs of the disease, it will have early treatment and a better quality of life,” recommends the specialist.
It is worth remembering that taking contraceptives (anti-heat vaccines) is not recommended.. This is because they contain substances that further increase the possibility of developing the disease.
