The announcement has reignited attention on the symptoms and challenges of being diagnosed with prostate cancer, a condition that, in many early cases, may not show obvious signs.
In Biden’s case, the diagnosis was made after he reported urinary symptoms, which led doctors to investigate his prostate and discover a cancerous nodule. The biopsy result showed the presence of bone metastases at the time of diagnosis.
The fact that the cancer has already spread increases the risk and complexity of treatment. However, one thing in its favor is that the tumor has demonstrated hormone sensitivity, which allows for therapies that block sex hormones.
Prostate cancer symptoms
In its early stages, prostate cancer is often asymptomatic, that is: it does not cause visible signs to the patient. Diagnosis is made through routine tests, such as digital rectal examination or prostate specific antigen (PSA), before clinical manifestations appear.
When symptoms appear, they are usually related to the urinary tract or the male reproductive system. The incidence of prostate cancer increases with age, and late diagnoses are more difficult to treat and cure.
Among the common signs, according to the Ministry of Health:
- Difficulty in starting urinary flow;
- Sensation that the bladder is not emptying completely;
- Weak or interrupted urine flow;
- Urinate more frequently, especially at night;
- Burning or pain when urinating;
- Presence of blood in urine or semen;
- Erectile dysfunction;
- Pain during ejaculation.
If the tumor spreads to nearby structures, other symptoms may appear, in particular bone pain, weakness in the lower limbs, unexplained weight loss and intense tiredness.
