With the testimonies of Ney Matogrosso and Gerson Conrad, musicians who defied censorship in the 1970s, “Primavera nos Dentes – A História do Secos & Molhados” already has a date for its premiere on Canal Brasil.
Five decades later, the duo reunites to remember their struggles against the dictatorship, in this series which also features testimonies from drummer Charles Gavin, set designer Cláudio Tovar and music producer João Marcello Bôscoli, among others.
“The repression itself gives rise to a very timely creative process. We could only communicate with metaphors because there was no point in being direct. There was no pragmatism in trying to be explicit, because what was explicit was censored. It had no chance of getting through,” explains Paulo Mendonça, poet and lyricist of several of the group’s songs, in a statement sent to Travel by fare.
Dry and wet
Originally formed by Ney Matogrosso (vocals), Gérson Conrad (vocals and guitar) and João Ricardo (vocals, guitar and harmonica), Secos & Molhados protested against the dictatorship in different ways, from their iconic makeup – linked to avant-garde theater – to the poetry of the songs, which carried messages between the lines.
However, the need to express discontent in a subtle way was not an aesthetic choice, but a survival and resistance strategy imposed by the strong censorship of the time.
“Repression itself gives rise to a very timely creative process, because it develops the possibility of metaphor. We could only communicate with metaphors because there was no point in being direct. There was no pragmatism in trying to be explicit, because what was explicit was censored. It had no chance of getting through,” analyzes Mendonça.

Based on the book of the same name by Miguel de Almeida, the documentary series is divided into four episodes and revisits the trajectory of one of the most revolutionary groups in Brazilian music.
“The years of lead in our country are told through the narrative of the series and mixed with the rich compositions of this band that masterfully evaded censorship in Brazil” reports producer Marcelo Braga.
In addition to archive images and an emotional mosaic of collaborators and fans of the famous group, the series also features testimonies from singer Duda Brack, Emilio Carrera, pianist of Secos & Molhados, actress Helena Ignez and singer Roberto Frejat, among others.
The series will premiere on October 31 on Canal Brasil.
