When setting up the dining room, various elements come into play, such as the material, shape and position of the furniture.
If a dining room could store everything that happens inside it, it would surely record not only the menu served on special occasions, but also stories of encounters, laughter and many memories.
But to truly be a “mother’s heart” and welcome everyone, this space must have a perfect protagonist: the ideal table. And this is not just in terms of furniturebut also comfort and practicality.
The architects Vanessa Paiva and Cláudia Passarini therefore clarify the main doubts regarding the choice of this piece of furniture and show how to combine functionality and beauty to bring an environment full of charm into the home. Check:
The size of the dining room
“Without a doubt the first point to analyze concerns the dimensions of the room”, comments Claudia regarding the design of the project. According to the architects, it is worth considering a distance of 80 cm, both between the table and the wall, and between the table and another piece of furniture, to ensure good circulation and not make the space too narrow. “However, when possible, it becomes even more comfortable if you consider a distance of 1.20 m,” he adds.
What is the best table shape?
Among the possibilities, the rectangular one is preferred by residents who are setting up their own dining room, after all, it is the one that best accommodates a large number of people. It is so sought after that it ends up dictating the market: most stores rely on the display of this model to fascinate the consumer.
But this does not mean that other formats have no place, especially if the surface available for the furniture does not correspond to the long structure. “If the question is between a round or square table for a small space, the ride iswithout a doubt, the best option“, says Vanessa.
The circular model is advantageous because it has no corners and allows you to add more seats, whether it is a chair or even a stool. “To make the table much more functional we can insert a revolving top, which facilitates entry and exit during service”, suggests Claudia.
How to choose the finish
The architects suggest natural materials like wood – which inspires intimacy and warmth – as well as stone and glass, “colder”, but equally elegant. In addition to marking the projectthese elements are excellent options from a practical point of view, since, with the right preparation, they do not run the risk of staining. And even if that happens, restoring solid wood or stone is very simple.
However, the same cannot be said about hairspray, which wears out prematurely. “It becomes practically inevitable to have to deal with some damage and have to cover the surface with glass, a finish that is far from ideal, because the original idea changes: the visualization of the sign. Instead, we start to live with the dominance of the other element”, says Vanessa.
When the top is made of glass, some precautions must be taken into consideration so as not to disturb the furnishings. Cláudia explains that it is interesting to use the element throughout the structure, including the legs: a different material would end up drawing more attention to the lower part than to the table itself. Furthermore, the mix of components can have a negative impact on the decor. “Transparency is a good investment when it comes to highlighting what’s on the floor, such as flooring or a rug,” he recommends.
Harmonize the environment
Some solutions make the difference in the design of the dining room and, among the main ones, they are table legs. It may seem like a small detail, but this aspect can be annoying on a daily basis.
To avoid headaches, the architect duo recommend investing in a centralized base, as it frees up more space for circulation, including for adding additional seating as needed.
Aesthetics is definitely one of the biggest concerns for residents, especially in terms of combination. In this regard, Vanessa underlines that combining does not necessarily mean applying the same material or creating a “coordinated outfit”. In fact, this compatibility makes the atmosphere balanced.
“Even when we choose wood as the material for the table and chairs, we don’t necessarily have to follow the same tone. The well-thought-out counterpoint creates a very interesting and modern look,” says the architect.
To complete the atmosphere and give that intimate warmth, lighting plays a very important role. Although it is not “mandatory”, the suspension on the table adds a particular shine to the room, but it is also functional, supporting the lighting design.
However, this highlight of the structure, always welcome to enhance its beauty, does not necessarily have to come from the suspensions: the same effect is achieved with the use of a spotlight. The interesting thing is finding a way to highlight the work as a whole.
