‘No time to be afraid’: Woman runs in honor of mother who faced cancer during pandemic.

Isis Gomes was one of the people who undertook the Run and Walk against Breast Cancer

The graphic designer Isis Gomes, 42 years old, participated in the 62nd edition of the Run and Walk against breast cancer, in Ibirapuera, south of Sao Paulo, together with her friend and neighbor Dulcineia Saraiva, 73 years old. The two ran this Sunday, the 12th, in honor of Isis’ mother, who was diagnosed with cancer during the pandemic, in 2020. The event is part of the O Alvo Azul campaign.

“Today my mother is well and has continued to take drugs since 2023, undergoing check-ups every 2 months, but the cancer is in remission,” says Isis. “I also believe I am contributing to the treatment of other women being treated at the Brazilian Institute for Cancer Control (IBCC).”

All the money raised goes to treat patients at the IBCC, which primarily serves the SUS. With the support of the campaign, the hospital carries out approximately 420 surgeries, 1,500 mammograms and more than eight thousand consultations every month, benefiting above all women in the public network.

“We didn’t have time to be afraid of the pandemic, because cancer doesn’t wait. We simply wore the mask and continued to focus on the treatment. My mother had a mastectomy, underwent chemotherapy sessions and today I’m here to honor her”, says the designer.

Vinicius Freitas also paid tribute to his mother

The managing partner of the ADC company, Vinicius Freitas, also participated in the race in honor of his mother. The diagnosis, 8 years ago, shocked the family. “I have always worked in the healthcare sector, at the time I worked in a laboratory and I knew that the treatments would not be easy,” he recalls.

Vinicius’ mother underwent two surgeries. The first involved partial removal of the breast (quadrantectomy). With the recurrence she had to return to the operating table for total removal (mastectomy). “Today my mother is 70 years old and I can say that she is healed.”

The Blue Target campaign turns 30 in Brazil. Started in 1995 by IBCC Oncology – with the symbol created by Ralph Lauren – the campaign focuses on raising awareness of the importance of early diagnosis.

The Alvo Azul t-shirt, which is part of Alvo da Moda’s Breast Cancer initiative, has already been worn by the likes of Xuxa, Angélica, Glória Pires and Reynaldo Gianecchini, trying to draw attention to prevention.

According to IBCC, in these 30 years, the campaign has raised more than R$ 85 million, with the participation of more than 400 artists and celebrities, more than 100 partner companies and more than 8 million t-shirts sold.

Cancer numbers in Brazil

Data from the Brazil Oncology Panel indicates that more than 108,000 women under the age of 50 were diagnosed with breast cancer in the country between 2018 and 2023. The Ministry of Health and the National Cancer Institute, in their publication “Breast Cancer Control in Brazil: Data and Numbers 2025”, show that the SUS performed 4.4 million mammograms in 2024, of which 2.6 million in the priority age group (50 to 50 years old). 74 years old).

According to the study, Brazil will register 73,610 new cases of breast cancer in 2025. In 2023, there were more than 20 thousand deaths, with a greater concentration in the South, South-East and North-East regions. The survey highlights a trend towards reduced mortality among women aged 40 to 49, reinforcing the importance of early diagnosis.
