One of the initiatives is the food support line for children with cancer, the demand for which increased during the economic crisis.

The hunger situation affecting 19 million families in Brazil, according to 2020 data from the Brazilian Research Network on Food and Nutrition Sovereignty and Security (Penssan), also affects the families of children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment. Even without citing the data, the director of the Ronald McDonald Institute, Bianca Provedel, observes an increase in demand for this contribution among the projects served by the NGO.
“We also assure these families, who have undergone care and need to maintain quality nutrition, all this nutritional support. This has been a growing demand. We see that it is a reflection of both parents leaving the job market for accompany their children during treatment and have no financial conditions after treatment, as well as a reflection of the current moment that the country is experiencing: economic crisis, pandemic, many people who need this food support “, explains Provedel.
The expectation is that this need will be satisfied with the funds raised in McDia Feliz, an initiative of the McDonald’s fast food chain that allocates all the proceeds from the Big Mac sold to social projects. In 2022, McDia Feliz will be this Saturday 27 and will serve projects from the Ronald McDonald’s Institute and Ayrton Senna Institute.
According to Provedel, McDia Feliz will serve 64 projects in 19 states and the Federal District. The projects focus on early cancer detection, training health care and education workers for disease diagnosis, but there are also support projects for hospitals that care for children with cancer; the Ronald McDonald House program, which welcomes children in care, and the Espaço a Família program, which are areas within hospitals where families receive food, bathe and rest.
In all, there are seven Ronald McDonald Houses, seven family spaces and several hospitals.
“Last year we had a growth of 13% compared to the previous year and, for this year, we expect to grow even more, because we have more capillarity, penetration and willingness for people to go out on the same day,” he adds. Mariana Scalzo, McDonald’s Marketing Director.
Focus on Brazilian education
In addition to health, McDia Feliz’s resources should also support initiatives related to another important pillar of our society: education. At the Ayrton Senna Institute, says Roberto Campos de Lima, vice president of the institution, about 3.7 million Brazilian students have been affected by the NGO’s initiatives. Of this total, about 2 million benefited from the resources of the Mc action.
According to Lima, the resources received in 2022 will allow for the creation of structures to address the challenges of the public education network. One of them is the socio-emotional development of students.
“All the skills necessary to follow in their learning process, creating a solid foundation to live together, interact”, adds the vice president. “To be less involved in violent activities and to be able to speed up the process of one’s cognitive abilities, as in Portuguese and in mathematics”.
For this year the institute plans to work on vocational training courses. It refers to support for young people to make the correct choice in the new high school grade – approved in 2017, the reform provides, among other things, an increase in the workload and a focus on vocational training.
Happy McDia takes place this Saturday 27, all units in the network. To participate, just order the sandwich.
