The product is applied to the tooth, then by spraying a solution of calcium chloride, which creates the hydrogel.

A discovery made by scientists from Nanchang University in China could revolutionize the way we currently take care of our teeth. This is because they announced that they have created a hydrogel treatment that can break down up to 94% of caries-forming bacteria and also whiten teeth. Will it be the end of the traditional brush and floss combination?
Published in the scientific journal of the American Chemical Society Applied Materials & Interfaces, the novelty consists of a mixture of bismuth oxychloride nanoparticles, copper oxide nanoparticles and sodium alginate. The product is applied to the tooth, then by spraying a solution of calcium chloride, which creates the hydrogel. Finally, the hydrogel is activated by a green light.
The process, tested on coffee stained teeth, fruit juices, tea and other foods, proved effective without causing damage to the enamel, unlike the known whitening techniques with hydrogen peroxide and blue light. In addition, it killed 94% of the cavity-forming bacteria at the site.
