Despite the fame it has gained on the Internet, those who don’t like coriander are better off taking no chances.

The recipe for “Healthy Coca-Cola” goes viral and we tested it

You already know that the drink most popular in the west is Coca Cola. No wonder, several videos that teach how to create a homemade coke went viral on the Internet. Guided by the possibility of discovering the secret ingredients of coca colawe decided to test: Works?

Quiz: how to make homemade coke with coriander and honey

The ingredients we used to make our test were the same as in the original video:

  • Coriander

  • Lemon

  • treasure

  • Ice

  • sparkling water

First we wash, separate from the stem and chop the finely chopped coriander leaves and set aside.

In second place came the turn of the lemon; we peel the fruit and chop the peel finely as in the video we used for this recipe and then we keep.

Once this is done, squeeze the lemon juice into a cup and add the coriander with the previously chopped peel of the fruit, forming a sort of marinade.

Next, we add honey to a pan and turn on the fire. The honey began to boil.

With the heat the honey became dark and much thicker, similar to a syrup, very soft and dark.

It is worth mentioning that in our experience, most likely, honey was overcooked. The ideal, according to the videos that went viral, would be to make it less “burned”. It is noteworthy that at that moment a swarm of bees appeared! No kidding. Watch the video to follow the scene.

Then we put the burnt honey in a glass and mix it with the lemon and coriander marinade we had reserved.

It was very tough at first, but we still managed to sift through the excess and only have the dark juice of honey mixed with the marinade.

Finally, we add two slices of lemon and ice. Let’s finish by adding some soda. Then, our homemade coke would be ready!

Result: Does the homemade coke recipe work?

Quick answer: No!

While the flavor pleased our publisher’s guinea pig – according to him, coriander with curiously combined burnt honey – we don’t think it will please most people. Although, aesthetically, the drink is very similar to the famous drink, the flavor does not accompany its presentation.

In his comment on our YouTube channel, our follower Moon immediately solved the puzzle:

“Turned to coke and drank a coriander soda.”

That is, the taste is more than one coriander soda than for a glue. Which, for those who like it, isn’t a bad request, huh? Here’s a tip for the soft drink industry. It is worth remembering that like or disliking cilantro can be genetic.

And we need to talk about heated honey.

What we need to know about honey in this recipe

We believe we have left honey in the fire for too long; long enough for it to burn. Marcus Argollo, one of our followers, drew attention to this detail on our TikTok:

“It’s to caramelize the honey, you burn it a little. I’ve already made it at home, the taste was more or less the same.”

However, even if honey doesn’t burn, heating it is harmfulas pointed out by some almanacs on our social networks:

“Guys, it is not recommended to heat honey, it can be DANGEROUS. HERE IS THE TIP!”Fabricio Poli said in our instagram.

“It made honey toxic, it can’t heat up to the point of burning.”adds Rodrigo Tariga on our Facebook page.

What happens when we heat honey

First, it should be noted that the properties of honey are invariably changed when honey is heated, even if the goal is to decrystallize food. In other words, heat creates a “mess” in your chemical compounds, completely altering them.

That is, heating honey for long periods and at temperatures above 40ºC causes it to lose its essential enzymes and nutrients, according to experts.

According to a study published by UNICAMP, although heating is a widely used procedure in the product, it can modify its natural properties, which directly affects the quality of food.

In short, the watchword is: avoid cooking or reheating honey for long periods of time. This includes individual heating of this food or even prolonged contact with other hot food which can raise its temperature above 40ºC.

What have we learned from this test?

  • Homemade Coke with Coriander and Honey doesn’t taste like Coke;
  • The recipe would be more honest if it were called coriander soda;
  • Honey does not need to be heated.
