Social projects related to food gain recognition from organizations in other countries
According to the National Survey on Food Insecurity in the Context of the Covid-19 Pandemic in Brazil, published by the Brazilian Research Network on Food Sovereignty and Security (PENSSAN Network) in June this year, 58.7% of the population is in a a certain degree of insecurity, food and 33.1 million Brazilians suffer from hunger in the country. Faced with this alarming scenario, several initiatives that generate social impact through gastronomy have become essential in the suburbs of Brazil. And these projects have received numerous international awards.
One of the initiatives that has received international recognition was the Peripheral gastronomy, a social project led by Edson Leite and Adélia Rodrigues, invests in training young people to work as chefs in the food market. In June, the project received an honorable mention at the Basque Culinary World Prize, awarded by the Basque Culinary Center, based in San Sebastián, and by the government of the Basque Country, which recognizes initiatives that generate social impact through gastronomy.
The social project Tide of Flavors recently joined the 50 Next list, a 50 Best initiative that brings together young people who carry out social actions around food around the world. Under the coordination of Mariana Aleixo, the project that is part of Redes da Maré, a civil society organization that has been operating for three decades in the Complexo da Maré, one of the largest groups of favelas in Rio de Janeiro, offers several gastronomic workshops for residents of the region.
Another project that joined the 50 Next list in 2021 was the Solano Trindade Agency, under the command of Thiago Vinicius de Paula da Silva in the Campo Limpo district, south of São Paulo. The project brings together Biological warehousewhich sells fruit and vegetables from family farming to the community, as well as the restaurant Rank organicallywhich offers recipes that allow the use of food in its entirety.
