Lung infection, explains pulmonologist Mauro Gomes, occurs when some microorganism, bacterium, fungus or virus manages to overcome the natural resistance of the immune system and penetrates the lungs. “There, this microorganism is multiplying and causing inflammation.”
Gomes, who is head of pulmonology at the Samaritan Hospital in Sao Paulo, explains that symptoms vary depending on the agent causing the condition.

“There are two lungs divided into multiple lobes. The more lobes that are affected, the more severe it becomes. In the case of viruses, Gomes explains that there are few treatment options available, but reinforces the importance of vaccination. “Each person has to do their own immunization, because in these cases it is better to work on prevention”.
As for fungi and bacteria, the course of treatment for the patient will depend on the type of microorganism that caused the condition.
