Coldplay cancel shows in Brazil due to singer’s lung infection; what can cause the problem?

The band Coldplay, which allegedly performed in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo between 11-22 October, canceled their performances after singer, Chris Martin, was diagnosed with a “serious” lung infection, according to the statement from the group.

According to an announcement made by Coldplay on social media, Chris has received strict medical rest orders for the next three weeks.

“We are working as quickly as possible to secure the new dates and will provide more information in the coming days.”

So far there is no more information specifying the singer’s type of lung infection. The condition can be caused by a virus, bacteria, or fungus, and treatment depends on what caused it.

Lung infection, explains pulmonologist Mauro Gomes, occurs when some microorganism, bacterium, fungus or virus manages to overcome the natural resistance of the immune system and penetrates the lungs. “There, this microorganism is multiplying and causing inflammation.”

Gomes, who is head of pulmonology at the Samaritan Hospital in Sao Paulo, explains that symptoms vary depending on the agent causing the condition.

“The covid-19 virus, for example, generates an acute infection, with cough, high fever and shortness of breath in a few days. Fatigue, cough, lack of appetite and sputum begin to manifest.”

Fungal infections, which are rarer and more common in people living in rural areas, can also take longer to show symptoms and even become chronic.

What can make an infection serious is the extent of the infection, the damage it is doing to the organ.

“There are two lungs divided into multiple lobes. The more lobes that are affected, the more severe it becomes. Another factor to measure for severity is how well the lungs work – whether the patient is poorly oxygenated and has shortness of breath or pain,” says André Nathan, pulmonologist at the SBPT (Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Tisiology) Respiratory Infections Commission

In the case of viruses, Gomes explains that there are few treatment options available, but reinforces the importance of vaccination. “Each person has to do their own immunization, because in these cases it is better to work on prevention”.

As for fungi and bacteria, the course of treatment for the patient will depend on the type of microorganism that caused the condition.

Since singing and dancing, activities Chris Martin performs on stage, require a lot of the cardiorespiratory system, exertion during performances would likely make him unable to perform well, and also risk discomfort, cough and low blood pressure. .

Rest, explains André Nathan, is important for the body to have time to recover. “It is important that the energies are reserved to fight the infection, and not to make physical efforts, especially the most intense ones.”
