Next, let’s look at some differences for “normal” yoga, but first it’s important to point out some similarities.
What is “normal” Yoga?
All yogas are normal and traditional. It is very common to refer to the yoga of India as “normal yoga” or “traditional yoga”, but every form of Yoga comes from some cultural tradition, so they are traditional.
In terms of antiquity, we will see below that some traditional documents based in Africa predate those based in India.
All yoga is also “normal”. Yoga of India has been presented as the norm in the West, which gives the impression that the others are “abnormal” or have some strange characteristic, but they are all normal.
If you want to refer to the increased popularity of Indian yoga, you can use expressions such as ordinary yoga, conventional yoga or just Indian yoga.
Similarities Between Kemetic Yoga and “Normal” Yoga.
Both yogas seek health and balance physical, mental and emotional body of practitioners, despite the fact that in western India yoga is often practiced only as a physical activity with a focus on performance.
To help us keep the mind steady, the spine straight and the heart calm, each yoga has a philosophy to guide practitioners’ lives. In addition, of course, to the bodily practices that involve meditations, breathing, postures, cleaning, words of power. Synchronize breathing and body movement.
Here you can find all the benefits of Kemtic Yoga.
Differences between kemetic yoga and “normal” yoga.
- Kemetic Yoga is originally recognized as African. In general, yoga of Indian origin is recognized as originating in India, but there are those who believe that the origin is also Africa, based on the migration of Dravidians from Africa to India. In this process, they would bring knowledge to the Asian continent.
- There is only one type of kemetic yogawhile Indian yoga can be divided into: Vinyasa, Hatha, Ashtanga and others.
- In Kemetic, breathing synchronized with movement is performed specifically in 4 stages (inhale-pause-exhale-pause). In yoga based in India it happens in different ways. In Vinyasa, for example, there are no pauses, each movement is synchronized with the inhalation or exhalation.
- Due to the 4-beat breathing, the movements are slowed down in Kemetic. The goal is to promote accurate self-awareness of each step until the final posture is reached.
- Poses that look similar are never the same. For example: The Downward Dog Pose (Adho Mukha Shvanasana) in Indian yoga is visually reminiscent of the Merkut of Kemetic Yoga. In this case, merkut means pyramid, and this triangular shape is part of sacred geometry which in African culture has the power to generate power and energy.
- Kemetic yoga has unique postures that represent the energies of nature, like Ausar, who is the force of cycles and resurrection; Selket, which brings the energy of self-preservation and Auset, of regeneration. For each of them there is a cosmology to understand the strength that posture offers.
- Kemetic’s most traditional sources of knowledge are the papyri and scriptures on the walls of the pyramids. (the first pyramid dates back to 2500 BC). In Indian yoga, there are documents such as the Upanishads (16th to 7th centuries BC) and yogasutras (150 BC), among others.
Different or not, it’s worth remembering that everyone can do any type of yoga, and the best way to feel the benefits of each modality is to try it.
How about a class of each to realize the difference in the body?
