The events have been declining for some months, reinforced in an interview with the health secretary of “Estadão” Jean Gorinchteyn
Although the Sao Paulo government recorded the first two monkeypox deaths in the state in a period of just a few days, the the last one took place this Saturday, 15, there is no upward trend in cases. On the contrary, the occurrences have been decreasing for a few months now, al Estadio Health Secretary Jean Gorinchteyn.
At the same time, there is still no forecast for the start of vaccination against the virus in the country, which could contain further contamination.
“These two people who unfortunately died, accidentally, in the same week, were young people who had problems with their immunity and who had been hospitalized for several weeks,” Gorinchteyn said. According to him, both patients, a 26-year-old man and a 36-year-old man, received antiviral treatment in an attempt to reduce the aggressiveness of the disease, but ultimately did not resist.
Gorinchteyn said the occurrence of the two deaths within a few days does not indicate a worsening of the disease, as cases have been slowing for a few months. “That (landscape improvement) it is due to the actions that have been established by the Secretary of State for Health in collaboration with the Secretary for Health Science, Research and Development, “said the secretary.
In all, the secretary points out that 93 hospitals are available for the treatment and reception of patients with suspected or known monkeypox. “Of these, 26 are maternity hospitals, perhaps thinking about the presence of pregnant women, in a serious way and who needed to be hospitalized,” he said, present at a seminar at Lide Saúde held on Monday 17 in Sao Paulo.
Data from the São Paulo government indicate that the state has recorded 3,900 cases of monkeypox so far, including only 18 in the first week of this month. The number of positive diagnoses has been steadily declining since late July, when the state reported 500 cases in just one week.
Even as the scenario improved, Gorinchteyn strengthened guidance for the population to take measures to protect themselves from monkeypox, such as avoiding sharing litter, and to seek medical attention when skin lesions appeared. Internationally known as monkeypox, monkeypox is a disease caused by a virus and transmitted by close or intimate contact with an infected person with skin lesions.
In Brazil, there are 8,600 confirmed cases of monkeypox, according to data from the Ministry of Health released on the 14th. At least seven deaths from the disease have been reported in the country. In addition to São Paulo (2), there are also records in Rio de Janeiro (3) and Minas Gerais (2). In all of these cases, the victims were men and had comorbidities and low immunity, according to health officials.
There is a tendency to control smallpox from monkeys, says the doctor
Professor of pediatrics and infectious disease at the Santa Casa de São Paulo, Dr. Marco Aurélio Sáfadi warns that sexual transmission was preponderant for the spread of the virus. “This outbreak has peculiar characteristics, because it has affected, almost in its entirety, young men and men who have sexual relations with men and who have behavior with multiple partners,” he said.
With the understanding of this profile, control measures have become more effective. “What we are seeing around the world is that once communication measures, disease recognition and strategies are implemented, there is a tendency to control,” said Sáfadi. According to him, the scenario tends to improve even more in Brazil with an eventual start of vaccinations.
“Brazil, curiously, is a country in which, compared to Europeans, there is a higher percentage of women and children affected, which perhaps reflects somewhat the lack of assertive communication on the part of health authorities – of transmission mechanisms. and what is important to know about the disease – and the implementation of prevention strategies. Other countries have already made use of selective vaccination and higher risk groups, “he said. Some examples are the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Vaccines against monkeypox have not yet arrived in São Paulo
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Health received the first shipment of monkeypox vaccines, with 9,800 units. Brazil has purchased approximately 50,000 immunizers through the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) revolving fund. The next batches are expected to be delivered by the end of 2022.
For now, as a guide from the World Health Organization (WHO), immunizers will be used to conduct studies. The research will serve to generate “evidence on the efficacy, immunogenicity and safety” of the monkeypox vaccine and, in this way, guide the decision of the managers, according to the Ministry of Health.
According to Jean Gorinchteyn, these doses have not yet reached the state of Sao Paulo. “We are awaiting the amount that will arrive in Sao Paulo, remembering that it will be destined for research centers. (from vaccines)“said the secretary.
He stressed that this is a different strategy from that adopted for vaccination against covid-19, in which the goal was to widen vaccination coverage as much as possible. “In these studies (it will be) the evaluation mainly of people who have a problem with their immunity, who have been in contact with or who are at risk of developing severe or fatal forms, “he explained.
