For the expert, this is explained by the increase in the number of women leading their families.

Debt reaches 80% of women: the credit card is bad

Debt continues to be a major problem for Brazilians, reaching 79.3% of households in September, according to the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC).

Research by gender shows that debt has increased among the female public, with 80.9% of women in debt, mainly on credit cards and overdrafts. Meanwhile, 78.2% of men are in debt.

For financial educator Aline Soaper, the figures are explained by the increase in the number of women running their homes.

“Furthermore, the data corroborates the scenario that their income is often not enough to pay off their debts,” he says.

The revolving credit card is the biggest bad

The specialist also explains why the revolving credit card is one of the big bad guys: “According to Central Bank data, the revolving credit card has registered new loans of R $ 159.3 billion up to June this year. This is the highest level in the period since 2014, when BRL 174.7 billion was granted ”.

Revolving is used when the consumer has spent more on his credit card than he can pay on his bill for the month, so he has to pay this amount in installments.

Also according to the Central Bank, credit card default affects more households earning up to a minimum wage, with a percentage of 12.24%, the highest increase since 2016.

How to get rid of credit card debt

Aline Soaper recommends consumers try to renegotiate their debts: “In a more stable economic situation, the ideal would be to reduce unnecessary purchases with a credit card. But what we are seeing is that families have had to use this financial resource to buy food. So the most viable option is to map the debts. To follow, although it is not a period of debt renegotiation fairs. Consumers can renegotiate what they owe through Serasa’s Limpa Nome platform, or in person at one of the post offices, ”she concluded.
