We consult experts to find out when it is safe for women and children.
If you are pregnant or in the postnatal period and are thinking about getting a tattoo, but I don’t know if it’s risky for the baby – or even if pregnancy and postpartum can interfere with the final result of the design – know that you are not afraid at all. We spoke to experts to find out what the main risks are and how long after giving birth it is safe to get a tattoo. Check it out below!

“There is no danger in relation to the tattoo ink, but in the procedure, the needle creates micro holes that can become a gateway for infections and that, yes, it can be harmful to the baby “, explains gynecologist and obstetrician Domingos Mantelli.
Carolina Esgalha, Gynecologist, obstetrician and professor of the course of Medicine at the University of Franca (Unifran), adds: “It is possible that they are transmitted, including, viruses such as those that cause hepatitis B and C, as well as HIV. There is also a greater chance of infection, as the pregnant woman’s immune system is more active during this time. We must also remember that women’s skin undergoes constant changes during pregnancy, which is directly linked to possible deformities in the tattoo design. “
In this regard, Mantelli points out that the hormones of pregnancy can make the tattoo fade or make the features smudge. “And this hormonal action continues during breastfeeding, so women are recommended to wait to do it after breastfeeding.”explains.
Finally, Carolina states that the mother can be tattooed by, at least 40 days after delivery – whether vaginal or cesarean -, which is equivalent to the postpartum period. Once again, however, it is worth remembering that the risks of a possible infection to the detriment of the baby remain during the period of breastfeeding. “And always remembering that the immediate result is not definitive, as the skin will undergo various changes, such as weight loss”concludes the expert.
