Teardrop-shaped huts occupy the forest in Japan

the architecture studio Yuko Nagayama & Associatesbased in Tokyo, has built a series of transparent teardrop-shaped huts within a forest in the city of Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan.

The size, height and position of the curtains were determined by 3D scans of the natural environment, such as the position of the trees, the direction of the branches and the spread of the leaves. In this way, the surrounding vegetation is reflected not only on the surface of the curtains, but also in their design.

A new way to contemplate the forest

The project seeks to highlight the experience of being in the forest and looking at the surrounding environment. Since traditional curtains often hinder this experience, Japanese architects came up with the idea of making the structures completely transparent.

-

The teardrop-shaped tents were set up in a forest of white birch trees, each with their own function and purpose. One can be used as a bed, the other as a reading corner.

-

When viewed from the inside of the teardrop, the exterior landscape is slightly blurry or obscured by a glow of light, adding a somewhat mystical touch to the experience.

Although Yuko Nagayama & Associates had the option of setting up tents in an empty lawn, the team chose the dense forest as the project site.

Each of the curtains has a round shape with a pointed tip, like a teardrop or a traditional Japanese Okiagari Koboshi doll. Each curtain faces a different direction.

The structures are tall and their sloping tops stand out among the trees, even from a distance. The distance between the structures was determined based on accurate 3D forest scenes created using a technology called Matter-Port.
