What triggers labor?

Understand the signal that your baby gives inside the womb showing that he is ready to come into the world. Find out what triggers labor.

When the last stretch of pregnancy comes around, that anxiety hits. You ask yourself, “When am I going to go into labor anyway? What triggers this process?” First, we know it’s hard to control the desire to know your child’s face right away. Despite this, it’s important to remember that waiting for labor to start naturally is ideal. This is what indicates that everything will happen at the right time. Thus, you can know that both your body and your child’s body are prepared for his or her birth. Except for exceptional situations (which must be correctly evaluated and reported by your doctor).

What triggers labor?

Ok, now that you know, let’s explain a little more. After all, what causes the whole “cog” to start rotating. “Although there is no scientific evidence of what really triggers labor, we can say that both the baby and the mother produce substances, especially hormones, that act in this process,” says obstetrician Cristina Balzan, in the book The woman gives birth (edited by Gutenberg).

What triggers labor?

When the baby’s lung is ready, it releases the so-called lung surfactant. This substance is a lipoprotein that enters the maternal bloodstream. It is she who “warns” that labor can now begin. From there starts a real “dance of hormones”, as defined by Cristina. Each of them has a function. Together, they make the magic happen. Labor evolves and triggers the expulsive phase. That’s when your child will finally step out of your body, right into your arms. Oxytocin, known as the love hormone, is one of the main ones. It is responsible for uterine contractions, which help the baby move out. There is also relaxin, adrenaline, endorphins… See the complete list of childbirth hormones here and understand more.
