How to make your home decor more sustainable

Reduce, recycle and reuse

Reducing consumption is the first important step, but it is also necessary to reuse and recycle what you already have. In decorating, in particular, it is entirely possible to reuse objects and furniture to help create a nice and comfortable environment🇧🇷 Therefore, you generate less waste and still manage to save money.

“It is unknown who said it, but it is the pure truth: ‘from the point of view of the planet it does not throw away’. There is no more space on Earth, urgent action is needed from people” , he says Juliana Cararo, architect and lecturer in the Architecture and Urban Planning degree course at the PUCPR.

Items to reuse

Instead of going to waste, old photos, product packaging, wooden crates, household items, clothes, furniture, among others, can be given new meaning and placed in the decoration. “Glass bottles, juices, wine, soft drinks, I transformed them into a beautiful kit for decorating the holidays, using them as vases and table decorations”, exemplifies the architect Juliana Cararo.

Old objects can help compose the decor

Items with sentimental value

For interior designer Mimy Anselmo, objects that have sentimental value can also be repurposed for compose the furniture🇧🇷 “These elements that bring a story are the ones that will bring more personality to the environment”, he explains.

Juliana Cararo says that when she got married, she received chairs over 50 years old, which belonged to her great-grandmother. “The metal part seemed to need a new finish, however, we decided to clean it with a product suitable for metals such as silver, aluminum and chrome, and to our surprise it was new. So, we changed the fabric of the padded part and it was all contemporary”.

Give objects a new look

Creativity is a great ally when it comes to transforming what you already have. With a little paint or applications, for example, you can give those mason jars a complete makeover. Thus, you can give them new functions in your home, such as using them to store spices and other foods.

In the case of furniture, according to Juliana Cararo, they can be completely renewed in a very simple way: with a change of fabric, good maintenance or even a painting different. He says the architect that “there are objects that don’t even need improvements or modifications, they are interesting in their own right, and only by giving them another use do they become different”.

look for inspirations

On social networks, such as Instagram and Pinterest, there are many references to customize and reuse objects in the decoration🇧🇷 “Out there you will find amazing things that people make, you don’t even need to be an artist, a craftsman or have a lot of skill, there are countless techniques and structures that will allow you to be daring and give a special touch to your home decor “says Juliana Cararo.
