Today, at 16:00 (Brasilia time), Brazil debuts in the 2022 World Cup in a match against Serbia. And, you know, the days in which the selection takes place are days of celebration. Along with the shouting, fireworks, music and car horns, voice and hearing problems arise. Find out how to avoid them with the guidance of otolaryngologist Dr. Bruno Borges de Carvalho Barros.

voice care

The specialist points out the first symptoms of voice alteration: tiredness, burning or pain when speaking, sagging of the voice, change in tone, throat clearing and hoarseness and sore throat. Also, it is common to experience ear pain, tinnitus, and a feeling of deafness. According to the doctor, when the voice fails or hoarseness appears, one should not whisper. This is because whispering can put extra strain on the vocal tract muscles and worsen voice characteristics that are already impaired.

“In case of hoarseness or aphonia, save your voice, using it only when needed, try to articulate words well, moreover it is essential to hydrate, especially on the driest days”, says the specialist. If hoarseness persists for more than a week, a visit to an otolaryngologist is essential.

In this festive season, it is also common to consume alcohol and have a non-standard diet, which can lead to gastro-esophageal reflux. Reflux, associated with vocal abuse, favors vocal cord lesions.

Know how to prevent hearing loss

Hearing loss is also among one of the most common disabilities. Then it can easily appear during the World Cup. The doctor. Bruno explains that everyone can have hearing problems due to excessive exposure to noise (fireworks, horns, whistles and the like), even if the party only lasts a month. “The most important thing is to take care of your hearing so that it remains intact and allows you to enjoy all the sounds until the end of the games. For this, some simple tips can become essential,” he says.

The doctor tells the main ways to avoid voice and hearing problems:

  • Avoid noisy environments for a long time. If the party is at your home, don’t abuse noise close to the ears of your family and guests, especially indoors. Go to windows or doors to sound horns, for example;
  • It is important for the elderly to always use hearing protection accessories (PPE) when exposed to more intense noise;
  • Put the music at a volume lower than half of the devices capacity;
  • Beware of music in environments with background noise. In this case it is common to exceed the healthy limit for the ears;
  • After exposure to loud noise, a “plugged-in” sensation, tinnitus, and hearing loss may occur;
  • If you find it difficult to understand or have a great need to turn up the volume on the television, seek out a hearing specialist to have your hearing checked.

Bruno argues that the sooner you take care of yourself, the better. Therefore, prevention is always the best medicine. “Hearing loss is irreversible and a few changes in habits already have very good beneficial effects on hearing health. Remember that listening is a privilege,” he concludes.
