Pastel de nata is the protagonist in typical Portuguese bars

Pastel de Belém is “from Belém” only in Portugal. Here in Brazil it is natal crayon🇧🇷 This is because the traditional Portuguese dessert was invented by the monks of the Jerónimos Monastery, in the Lisbon neighborhood that bears the same name as the dessert and has a certified origin. The same happens with other delicacies, such as the Coimbra pastry, for example.

Legends tell that the recipe was born as a way to exploit the gems left over from the processing of wafers and that it was sold in the surrounding area to keep the monastery standing. The preparation was consolidated, and it became a sort of tradition to visit the region to taste the dessert.

Although they do not carry the original name in Brazil, the houses that offer homemade custard tarts are no different. Check out some places that serve the deliciousness.

Quinta do Marquis

The establishment located at 1853 Faria Lima cultivates a bit of Portuguese culture in the traditional recipes present there. In the typical showcase of the bakery, the handmade custard tarts rest in one of the rooms of the house.

Served very hot, the unit costs R$8.50 and melts in your mouth.

However, it is not only the fish that shines on the restaurant’s menu, and the pastel de nata house does not lose its prominence.
