The ‘King of football’ was hospitalized again for tests
Former footballer Skin he had to be hospitalized once again this Tuesday the 29th, for tests. The trip to the hospital was not planned; he was taken from his wife, Marcia Aokiafter having swelling all over the body.
In 2021, the “football king” has started treatment for colon cancer and has to go to the hospital often.
OR colon cancer It is a malignant tumor that affects the large intestine and rectum region. According to Ricardo Carvalho, an oncologist at Beneficência Portuguesa, a patient with this type of cancer often has no symptoms. “The tumor is found on a routine exam,” she explains.
When they appear, the most common symptoms are bleeding in the stool, change in bowel habits, i.e. the bowels may become more trapped or loose. Another common symptom is a change in the shape of the stool. As well as loss of appetite and weight loss.
The geriatrician and vice president of the Brazilian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SBGG), Marco Tulio Cintraexplains that there are genetic factors that can contribute to a case of bowel cancer, such as young people being able to develop bowel polyps.
“People who have inflammatory bowel disease, like Crohn’s disease, for example, are more prone,” she says.
The doctor also explains that other cardiovascular risk factors, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can contribute to the development of the disease.
“Because of these risk factors, which are widespread in the elderly population, bowel cancer is more common in this age group,” he explains.
Importance of early diagnosis
The geriatrician warns of the importance of early diagnosis, through tests such as occult blood in the stool or colonoscopy, starting from the age of 45. “Unfortunately, most of the diagnoses are made in advanced cases, when the person has atypical weight loss, anemia or bleeding in the stool,” he adds.
The clinical oncologist of the Sírio Libanês hospital Tulio Pfiffer emphasizes the importance of colonoscopy. “85% of colon cancers arise from polyps. Many polyps don’t cause problems, but those that do take about ten years to become malignant. Therefore, it is important to take the exam, ”he says.
The intestinal polyp is an alteration caused by an abnormal growth of the lining of the large intestine (colon and rectum). Pfiffer explains that the test removes one of these polyps and enters a surveillance program to prevent cancer.
curable type of cancer
Marco Túlio Cintra says that this type of cancer is curable, provided that the diagnosis is made early. He also says that even in the most severe cases, with metastases, a cure is still possible.
Treatment for this type of cancer includes surgery, which can correct the problem, and chemotherapy and radiation therapy, in more specific cases.
For Tulio Pfiffer, healthy living is still the best way to prevent disease. “Healthy food, with fruits and vegetables rich in fiber, avoiding fried foods, moderate consumption of red meat, physical activity, low alcohol consumption and zero cigarette consumption”, lists the oncologist.
